Hopefully they'll have gotten rid of those god damn awful Marvell Wifi Cards!
sted Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 yeah the marvel card in my surface pro is awful it occasionally just decides nope im not going to work until you reboot and about 1/2 the time it comes out of hibernate/standby it wont reconnect automatically to a network I have to manually connect to the wifi

It may be worth removing any AV software temporarily if installed to see if its something with that.

Actually killing the wifi card is rare having to manually connect to wifi is variable last night id did it every time no issue day before I had to manually connect it every time
Dos_Box Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I have to admit, the Surface Book looks amazing and it does appear that finally, Microsoft have taken a leaf out of Apple's book and got themselves a team of very skilled designers. In fact, the whole show resembles an Apple launch event from the days when they used to innovate. Sorry, Apple, but come on, you seem to have lost your inventive edge of late. I can't wait to see one in the flesh, and this firmly throws the innovative onus over to other hardware manufacturers to catch-up. Well done Microsoft, it's nice to see you raising the stakes once more. *Let's just hope there are no unseen design flaws waiting to catch the unwary in the near future!

Oaktech Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I'm interested to see what the battery life is like on the surface book. It's packing some serious processing, Nvidia graphics and a big, bright screen. All aspects which have been associated with pretty poor battery life in quite recent memory!

Price seems a bit excessive as well. You always will pay a premium for the first wave of next-gen products, espececially well designed ones. I think Microsoft have copied another thing from Apple! flyinghaggis Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 (edited) I'm intrigued to try out the Surface Book when it arrives in store as it's a pretty novel sounding concept. It seems like a good strategy whereby MS positions itself building high end 'reference' hardware and then leaves it to the OEMs to take it to the mainstream. Kind of similar to the approach Google takes with their Nexus range of devices. At least now it feels like Microsoft is taking the lead in showing OEM's where it wants to go with Windows 10 which should make for a better experience all round. I'd definitely be interested in buying a Surface Book, or a similar convertible device, as now if feels like the finally have the "tablet that can replace your laptop" they've been promising us for years even if it is basically just a laptop Edited October 7, 2015 by flyinghaggis

I believe up to 12 hours with keyboard attached as it has an additional battery in it. 1

That's a pretty decent battery life overall if the reports are to be believed. I think I also heard that the 'tablet' part has 3 hours of battery life on it's own without the base. If the CPU is in the tablet and the GPU in the keyboard dock does that mean both parts will require their own separate cooling fans?

I have not seen hours for tablet mode but yeah I suspect there is some cooling in the keyboard as well.

I'd read reports that the Surface pro 4 was going to be passively cooled but it looks like there is a cooling fan inside it so given the same CPU range presumably the Surface Book will also have one in the tablet section? They also fork out for the latest expensive smart phones (iPhone good example) even though they don't use it for anything more but Internet/Emails and notes. Still nice to see M$ do something that can compete with the MacBook.

I had been mulling over getting one of the base spec m3 (fanless) Surface Pro 4's to replace my old laptop but having checked out reddit and SurfaceForums.com there are a lot of folks complaining about experiencing a variety of bugs and glitches on it so it's kind of put me off. Hopefully they're just due to issues with the newness of the Skylake chipset and will be fixed sharpish. Also, I really wish they'd bundle the keyboard rather than the pen as even in base spec (4Gb/128Gb) it's a pretty steep £860 by the time you add the, virtually essential, type cover. I'd need to try it out before spending that kind on money on one! It does look like an impressive piece of kit though. Edited November 20, 2015 by flyinghaggis
