Poll: State of play re: OS

Just wondering what the current thinking is re: OS for the masses. We're currently on Windows 7 everywhere, when Windows 8 came out I decided to skip it and wait for Windows 10. Now it's here, I'm wondering when to deploy, but I'm in no particular rush. Any thoughts...?

Don't see the point currently, we aren't using BYOD really, and Win10 has nothing new that 7 doesn't (That's "needed").

 

Might look at it over halfterm etc to play around more but highly unlikely to move to it yet, especially when not supported on SIMs etc

Moved my office PC to Windows 10. So far, it offers no advantage over Windows 7 so I will be holding off!

imo win 10 is better than 7 (it boots faster and uses less ram if nothing else (though built in hyper v can be useful)), but id still rather have 8.1 it just seems a more finished os 10 still seems like a beta to me just things like the mail app (though granted its better than it was but still has issues with my Hotmail account) changing the res for instance on 10 is a bit of a faf compared to 7/8.1. Granted in a managed environment 7 is easier to deal with but 8.1 isnt that bad (though I am struggling getting rid of say xbox video but applockering it so it wont load works for me)

We have Windows 7 everywhere except for on staff Surfaces where we have Windows 8.1. We currently plan to roll out Windows 10 on selected devices next summer, but we are not committed to this yet.

For me the reason for going windows 10 is two fold... Firstly it will give me one OS across all devices that is capable of using DirectAccess over HTTP thus allowing me to sack off the fragile PKI that is necessitated by using it on windows 7. Secondly it will allow me to have one OS across all devices that, current indications suggest, the staff won't hate in the same way they do when transitioning from W7 to W8 and vice-versa.

Currently all Windows 7 and have been for the past 6 - 7 years (Feb 2009) seems like we are at a place as we were with XP, great OS pretty much solid throughout so my thoughts............!!!

 

Will probably move to Windows 10 next year (Summer Hols) all being well

Windows 7 all the way, with a handful of 8.1 Surfaces.

 

Windows 10 is a shambolic mess so I'll be waiting until next summer at least before rolling that out anywhere.

Posting to say that I have responded in the poll and to give the thread a bump now it has a poll.

Considered deploying 10 next summer but to be honest while i haven't tested it very thoroughly yet, i feel it needs a bit more work before i fancy touching it again regarding the domain. It's lovely at home but i felt i went to windows 7 one year too early because for many issues i had to find solutions myself that were undocumented or poorly documented. I think with windows 10 i'd prefer to wait for other early adopters to find the issues and then deploy in 2017.

Haven't decided yet, waiting for the new release of Windows server to be released before we properly assess it.

Windows 7 x64 across the board.

 

Probably look at going to Windows 10 next summer if it's any good. Not played with it yet. Probably install it on my personal Mac when I upgrade it to El Capitan.

Ideally I'd like to roll it out across the site next summer having tested it this year and built a working environment. Whether we can get to a place where we're happy to do that is another matter entirely; from the bit of work on it I've done so far there seem to be quite a few major issues currently that will need to be ironed out.

Just wondering why? I didn't think there was anything special I new version of server that was Windows 10 specific?

Site 1: Newer machines W8.1, older ones W7. Will have a play and might look at W10 for any new kit next year.

Site 2: As above.

Site 3: Only just got them on W7! More likely to put new kit on W8.1 because I'm happier with it.

Slight mixture of Windows 7 32 and 64 bit here.

 

Would like to move to Win 10 summer 2016 if possible but that will depend on if SIMS and other Financial software is supported and reliable enough. Sure I read somewhere SIMS was planning on supporting Win10 from the Spring 2016 release? Is that still the same or have the goalposts moved?
