Sheridan Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Our Apple configurator managed ios8 ipads are now all being updated by the little darlings which is causing a few issues. I know apple have a very poor attitude to device lockdown/management but is there any way to stop end users from performing an IOS update? I would rather do it on a schedule that suits us!

You can block the Apple update servers using your web filtering solution. I can't remember where I got the list of them from now, but it won't be hard to find on Google. 1

Sheridan Posted September 25, 2015 Author Posted September 25, 2015 Cheers, I'll give that a try. Presumably it won't work now ios9 have already been downloaded? I only want the configurator to push the updates out,even if it's once a term!

A new version of Apple Configurator is almost guaranteed to be released on Wednesday. Sheridan Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 Because IPad was never intended to be managed and is a consumer device first.... And it's Apple so usual backwards logic applies. This is what annoys me, the ipad seems to be the only choice for schools now but in some ways they are the worst device to use! We've found Hudls easier to manage. Even with having to set them up individually. Once they're done the parental controls lock them down properly - take a look Apple and do this yourself!

The current version of Apple Configurator works absolutely fine with iOS9 so don't really know why you are complaining.... At the very least you should be enrolling into Apple's DEP program, this will give you the following new great features when used with an MDM solution.. Sheridan Posted September 29, 2015 Author Posted September 29, 2015 I've managed to deploy ios9 with Configurator 1.7 - it just doesn't allow you to manage any of the 'new' restrictions.
smithson83 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Has anyone upgraded yet??? I'm just downloading El Capitan to be able to install Config2, but I'm worried about Config1.7.2's database etc. Will 2 just upgrade and suck everything in?

But its supposed to be aple to pull all the data, app, settings VPP etc in from 1.7.2, but I just get an error "An Underlying Service (ACUMigrationServiceContext) unexpectedly quit."

steewy Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 I'm on El Captain and using Apple Configurator 2. It seems like it migrated all the data from the previous version fine I feel glad because a lot of users didn't get that far ! Now I need to learn how to use Apple Configurator 2 and it seems really complicated compare to before. It seems like I will have to setup a DEP and move all my curent redemtion codes to VPP and MDM even if I would prefer not to as it's not useful for us a school to use DEP. So far I can not use apple configurator 2 to do what I was doing in the old version: -Prepare iPad and restore from a backup -push apps and profiles to a group of iPads. It seems like until there is more documentation on how to use apple configurator 2, I will stay away from it.
