Trapper Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Who have never seen, or can barely remember CRT monitors. John Carmack of ID Software programming Quake on a 28" CRT monitor that weighed 45kg. Trapper Posted August 28, 2015 Author Posted August 28, 2015 Aww man I feel old. Some photos of my manly and mammoth 19" LG Flatron CRT, along with a 15" Apricot CRT nicked from a local school skip along with a mid-1990s JVC 24" TV.
elsiegee40 Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 What are these new fangled colour monitors about? Youngsters today! No respect for proper technology.... * rocks in chair *
Homer Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 That would have made an awesome part in a BOFH story... executive, roof, fall... monitor slipped out of hands *smash*
MatthewL Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 When I started working in 2005 we were just taking the last few out and swapping with CRT's. I managed to get 20 in a 3cylinder 900cc 2 door Corsa (think they were 15" ones) and take to a scrap site up the road. They felt the weight of the bigger Dell OptiPlex 520's which we were deploying at the time now the PCs are matchbox! Glad CRT's are not in much use these days when deploying kit.
witch Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 As a not hugely tall or strong woman, CRTs were the bane of my life when I started this lark in 2002. I remember trying to move three up some stairs using one of those weird three wheeled, isle-of-man trolley thing. Several times I nearly dropped one. It was a real relief when they became obsolete. I made it my mission to get rid of them all as quickly as I could and managed to blag 30 replacements off the local high school
rich_tech Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I dont miss CRT monitors either, heavy horrible old things, my 19" one was a pain to lug about. Even better though, until about 3 years ago, we had a Maaaaasssive 32" Phillips CRT based TV, which took up a quarter of our living room in our old house, was glad to skip it in the end.

We managed to give our Philips 32" CRT away on freecycle. It was quite a struggle cramming it in the back of the Fiesta that came to get it
Andrew_C Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I think the last of our 26" (?) Hantarex monitors went over the holiday. These were steel cased jobbies, and the last was on a bracket high on a wall. I passed the buck on removing that one!
witch Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 We managed to freecycle our 32inch TV as well - the guy who took it was very very pleased and so were we!
3s-gtech Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Got rid of them all a few years back, along with all of the old CRT TVs. Hated moving the damn things, and it took a whole store room holding them until the recyclers came. Judging by his distance from the screen, Carmack has given himself face cancer from that thing.
rich_tech Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I can remember filling a transit van to the roof in a company I used to work for with 14" and 15" CRTs that we had piling up and taking them to a specialist rubbish dump at the time, cost a fair bit for the tonnage to dispose of them all. One guy I worked with pulled a 24" CRT out of a skip for a contractor and it worked fine in the office, though it took up half of his desk at the time. I am surprised the philips tv got in a fiesta, I barely got mine into my 306 at the time, it was a nightmare bringing it down to our house from the in-laws. The one good thing about those type of CRTs is that no one could nick them I suppose after a certain size because of the weight., as you would be looking for a burglar with slipped discs and hernias
Devontechie Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 We removed a crt from 1 of the companies we support on Friday! This was on 1 of there servers!
mrbios Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Genuinely curious now, is there anyone here young enough not to have used a CRT? I can't remember when flat became the norm Used to love my 22" Iiyama flat fronted CRT, back in my CS days
FN-GM Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 I remember CRT's being in service. This doesn't make me one of the young ones! OMG!
MrEprise Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 As we still have loads of CRTs, our Students get plenty of exposure to them which means they can't really turn around and say they've never seen or used one - assuming they know what one is in the first place!
XiJ Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 My first real IT job involved setting up a lot of iMacs - the 15" crt jobs. They were stacked 5 high in boxes and we had to carry them upstairs. Then the fire Inspector came and told us to move them all. The old Mac 5500's at the top were worst. I fell down the stairs with a (boxed) I Mac once. It landed over the bannister and me on top. Surprising cushioned - God Bless Apple packaging! The eMacs were worse. 17" and no handle just vey slippy plastic.
Garacesh Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 .. is that a widescreen CRT? I was unaware such a thing existed..
synaesthesia Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 Good old days! Yeah there were a few widescreen ones about; not too odd if you think about the early widescreen tellies! Remember seeing & lifting my first 21" CRT in my first job as a green 16 year old. Bloody hell! Also remember lumping mine to lan parties, what a nutter. I certainly remember using a degaussing gun to sort some of them out - those were fun! Still quite a few people swear by CRT screens, usually those hankering after a certain colour reproduction or response time. Like many here who cringe at the mention of CRTs, I like to swear at them. Plus it's something to laugh about when you're trying to hang a 60" plasma display somewhere. Under all the grunts, swearing and moans from the 3 people trying to lift the ruddy device "At least it's not a CRT" can often be heard.
3s-gtech Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 After lugging my 17" Sun CRT across campus to my room in uni, many years ago, I lost love for them pretty quickly! That thing would do some insane refresh rates and resolutions for the time, but it weighed 30kg or so as it had a near flat screen.
Arthur Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 (edited) is that a widescreen CRT? I was unaware such a thing existed. Widescreen CRTs definitely existed. If I had the money back in 2002 I would have bought a 24" Sony GDM-FW900. It was an awesome monitor. Even today its maximum resolution of 2304x1440 @ 80 Hz is higher than many of the screens you would find in a school. Most people would run it at 1920x1200 @ 85 Hz though since that was the recommended resolution. The only bad thing about it was the weight: 42 kg (!!!). http://i.imgur.com/r4h13gB.jpg The last two CRT monitors I had were a 19" Sony GDM-F400 FD Trinitron and a Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 93SB. The best thing about these screens were that they were almost completely flat instead of curved. Edited August 30, 2015 by Arthur
sidewinder Posted August 30, 2015 Posted August 30, 2015 The eMacs were worse. 17" and no handle just vey slippy plastic. God yeah those were awful. Felt like they were filled with concrete. I think aside from those, I haven't handled a CRT in nearly 10 years. I take flatscreens for granted these days, some configurations of rooms and suites just wouldn't be possible with CRTs. Still miss being able to select any resolution and not have it look blurry though!
comrade Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) The last CRT monitor was replaced in 2013 here. My school years started with green and black CRT monitors (in primary school, it was old then as my school had no money), remember playing games on them, with a window and flowers, god knows what game that was, and ended with full colour windows 98. Think as I left college the first LCD screens/ xp were coming in. I still think CRT TV's offer a better picture for old stuff, 70's etc. On LCD screens the stuff just does not look clear.
