Yes I agree.

 

Just tried running the sysprep without the copyprofile=true and the failing laptop is fine. I hope they fix this soon.

 

The start menue look awfull as I have removed all the modern apps. Might have to start using GPO to add the shortcuts back in.

 

So wait, if you make the image without copyprofile but put the default user.v5 from a machine you syspreped with copyprofile on before, it'll work?

 

 

How does this get past QA, how!?

Don't know if it is the same for everyone but. We have Windows 10 showing up in our VLSC but I don't have any keys for it. We are told to contact our licence authorities

 

A lot of people seem to be having issues with VLSC not showing keys. We must be one of the lucky ones with KMS and MAK showing for a few days now. Hopefully they will sort it all out soon!

So far I'm finding 10 to be a complete mess, barely manageable with group policy and with so many irritants (like Edge!) that I can see us heading away from Windows in the future if this botched up mess is what MS offer up as an OS.

 

I had high expectations for 10, but so far I can't even get a half decent looking test machine working in a state I would present to staff here.

You will be heading away from windows and going to what!? Good luck getting that past SLT!

I remember this fella when W8 came out. One of the many, "in my day we had Windows XP and were grateful for it" bunch.....

 

Personally I fancy keeping up with the times and staying relevant.

Agreed, but the ability to configure 10 to your requirements has taken so many steps backwards it's like being back to windows 95!

I assume you mean the one you get when you log in to the machine, I think it only happens on first login.

 

I was at a Microsoft organised technical event where someone who had been using W10 TP for a while and they had redirected just about everything they could and still found that it took several minutes to set the account up. The Microsoft Education team were aware of the problem and had made it clear to the Windows OS team that as far as education were concerned a long login time was not appropriate and needs to be fixed. All it takes is for students to use a different machine every time they go into a lesson and a good chunk of the lesson would be lost in waiting for the login to complete. It's not such a problem is business where you tend to use one machine every day and also for longer periods at a time. Hopefully the education team will keep on this and get the Windows OS team to resolve this problem soon.

 

That would of been me along with my many other questions of regarding the education SKU, LTSB and patching.

 

That Microsoft Education team as they called themselves was a farse! They knew NOTHING other then what was readily available on the Internet to read and since then and the whole 7 days I dedicated to ripping RTM apart and prepping an image ready i have written off and benched as Windows 10 for an education / enterprise perspective is a joke at the moment.

 

The bit where I asked can you upgrade from Enterprise Win 7/8 to education and they all said yes, bollox ! You can't and I've spoken direct with 3 of them and all I got was a "sorry we thought you could".

 

Microsoft Reading are nothing more than consultants with no more access to Windows 10 knowledge then anyone else on the Internet.

So which version are people plumping for? Education? Education with Features on Demand? Enterprise?

 

Enterprise because of the LTSB aspect mainly.

Enterprise LTSB will be what we go for.

 

Its not got all that fancy stuff installed as default. Its one of the cleanest installs I've seen of a base Windows OS in fact.

From what I've seen elsewhere Chromebooks are becoming an increasing threat for MS after a slow start. Difficult to argue with some of the hardware pricing and set-and-forget configuration for basic use cases.

 

More advanced apps still need something more flexible on the OS level (unless you're willing to fork out for VDI) but the initial setup and login process in W10 really needs looking at. Same with the Azure AD side, sounds perfect for working primarily in O365 (CloudBook-style) but it's been a bit picky so far.

Maybe you could go on some training? I think all items I have seen complaints about from yourself are manageable.

Finding that quite surprising. Edge isn't installed by default on the Enterprise LTSB version (nor is Internet Explorer), so you just add your browsers of choice).

Your LTSB choice is an interesting one, weren't MS suggesting it's only meant for very specific usage scenarios? Can understand why you're going down that route if it is a clean, minimal install but will it also hold you back from the next wave of features (I imagine \ hope the next sub-release will come out soon and smooth out some of the rough edges that have been found so far)

LTSB simply means they don't keep releasing major new features and changes every few months. Instead, its like we update now - new version every few years with the major changes rolled in - nice and stable, tested and ready to go.

 

I'm quite surprised that any schools would use a version other than the LTSB release! New features mean new bugs, which means more work for everyone.

Microsoft have made it clear that the Enterprise LTSB versions are for specific purposes, i.e laptops in tanks, emergency services i.e where updates are not an option etc etc.

 

With Windows 10 Education and Enterprise you can be up to 2 major updates behind the current service branch before you are forced to update.

 

Why they have even put LTSB on as an option on VLSC is not helpful if they don't want Education to use it.

^^^ that's what I was getting at, does seem odd Microsoft giving that opportunity for fragmentation of the Education install base

 

As you have said in time I'm sure those who have gone against the grain will be in a situation when something is realised on the Education SKU that cannot be used on the Enterprise or Enterprise LTSB SKUs.

 

There has to be a specific reason for a separate Education SKU as its never been segregated before. What that reason is no one knows yet.... Will just have to wait and see I suppose.

Education is far more "home" angled than the Enterprise branch anyway - with it not being able to update from Pro, but able to update from Home editions of Windows. So, I really don't see why anyone would be using Education other than it being named that way.

I can't find where they've said that. What I can find is that Windows 10 will allow IT managers only 4 months between release of an update and it being forced to be installed - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt598226(v=vs.85).aspx

 

Do you really want major OS updates to be as regular as every 8 months?

Sorry but that response still seems to be Microsoft trying to dictate how people should run their networks. Put simply - we do not want Microsoft forcing major updates/feature changes upon us every 8 months. This network belongs to the school, not Microsoft, and as such we want to be entirely in charge of when computers get updates. LTSB offers this capability.

 

Imagine the chaos it could cause with tools like SIMS.Net? They only support a version of Windows 6 months after release. We turn up, Microsoft force an update and bam, we end up unable to run SIMS.Net. Or any other of the many weird and wonderful pieces of software schools run that takes far too much effort to get to run in the first place.

MS have already stated that there will be additional APIs in the Education release compared to any other version in he future.

 

LTSB is only for mission critical environments - power stations and hospitals for example!
