It only started last week and the first episode sets it up to be a very good series indeed. President Bauer Power Hour, It's more or less just 24 - it's just missing the countdown clock

Bearing that in mind, would you say it's worth persevering or that it's not for me? Hmm it depends on what you are expecting. If you are expecting the tapes to become a big part of the story with some kind of reveal then you will be disappointed, so far at least they are just character motivation. Initially that was why I started watching it, thought it would be more about sci-fi multiverse stuff. 6 episodes in though and that doesn't really matter anymore as its much more about the characters. The character and world development does get much better as it goes along. In my opinion it does a pretty good job of painting a world under Nazi rule i.e. totally brutal, unable to trust anyone, no freedom and living in constant fear. In the episode I just watched I actually felt real tension and anxiety due to the actions of one of the characters that was quite obviously walking into a trap. It is not often I can say a TV show does that to me. 1

It is not often I can say a TV show does that to me. Thanks. I saw it a while ago, so my memory is quite fuzzy, but it just didn't grip me (I may even have nodded off!). The only bit that stuck in my mind was the sheriff(?) calmly explaining what the ash falling from the sky was. Might keep the eps a bit longer. I'm trying to clear stuff that I don't think I'll get around to, but suspect I'll just get a higher capacity drive! Must say that I was looking forward to "The After", which "won the vote" for the AMZ pilots the year before High Castle, but they decided not to go ahead .

Up to series 7 of the remastered X Files now - pretty much everything after the film has been disappointing. Even mulder and scully seem to be a bit tired of it The series I am enjoying the most at the moment is American Horror Story (season 6) but my other half is rationing that to one episode a week (the way we used to watch tv in the 90s!) Going to have a look at designated survivor now though
LeMarchand Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 Have just finished Season 1 of "Outlander" and can now see why only Amazon seemed interested in picking it up. Starts well enough, with a bit of time-travel (via standing stones) and the feisty heroine (who often comes across as a bit rude) meeting up with a hunky Highlander. The last 2 eps of the season were pretty hard going, with the torture and rape of one of the main characters depicted on screen for what feels like the whole 2 hours. I suppose it made a change for this to happen to one of the main protagonists and for it to be who it was (trying to keep this spoiler free) but it all felt very gratuitous. The show is based on a series of books that is very popular with ladies, and is apparently reasonably faithful to the book. This does make me wonder about some of the books that "the gentler sex" have taken to heart: this had the aforementioned rape (it wasn't the first in the series), recently we have "50 Shades" with all the abuse and a few decades back the Virginia Andrews books which were full of incest were flying off the shelves.

A recent episode had him making a remark about standing in the corner having a... erm, "indulging in onanistic pleasures" that I can't see an American scriptwriter putting in a non-cable show. As the term is a bit better known in the States these days I'm surprised it got past the network. Are you on S2 yet? Tricia Helfer joins the cast.

Simcfc73 Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 I'm halfway through watching Man in the High Castle really enjoying it so far. In brief the world shown is one in which the Axis won World War 2 and America is now ruled by the Nazis and Japan. The writing and acting are first class and you really feel the sense of despair and desperation the characters are going through. Also started watching Westworld which looks like it might turn into an interesting series. i watched the first 2 episodes yesterday, very stylish and tense. I heard the second series comes out in December but I was hoping it would just be a one series wonder so we found out what was going on and not dragging it out.. ala LOST Westworld is excellent, really enjoying it.

Was much better than I was expecting but so far I wouldn't be upset if it didn't progress beyond the first season. Little bit confused over how no-one has noticed one character's bionic leg and how an inner-city comprehensive appears to have no oriental pupils. Also spent a lot of time trying to work out who Miss Quill reminded me of before I realised she looks like a sexy version of Ellen Greene's Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors. Much, much better - in fact probably the best show I've seen so far this year were the first 2 eps of Westworld. If it wasn't for the fact that Mme LeMarchand won't watch anything "Western" I'd have burned through all 4 eps by now. Highly recommended with the caveat that, as an HBO show, there are lashings of nudity and violence.

The other I like is Braindead on Amazon Prime. Alien bugs taking over by eating people's brains in Washington DC. A nice mix of thriller and comedy.
