Dos_Box Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Up in the attic last night I came across an 'internet radio' I'd brought from Aldi many moons back. IIRC it lasted about 5 months. Not that it had broke or anything, but that it had several obselecences built in. Firstly it was wireless only but only supported WEP as an encryption standard, secondly it could only use Real Time Streaming Protocol and a Microsoft streaming protocol. It also relied on many interet radio stations complying to a particular standard of classifications. As you can imagine, whilst there were plenty of internet based stations, many of them didn't use the supported protocols, not only that, but many simply didn't have the bandwidth to to provide a reliable service, so up in the attic it went. Have you ever brought anything that was obsolete almost as soon as you unboxed it, please let us know if you have as it'd be good to share the pain. I also own a Wii U.
matt40k Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Got a Dell XPS laptop with Vista - got nicked from my home within 2 weeks of getting it. Before I could get it covered on the home insurance. Still have the PSU for it and the discs.
LiamH Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Had a Wii that was never used beyond the novelty period, My sister pinched it and i didn't even notice for 6 months. Bought a zboard keyboard that i could never get the hang of, got used for about a week before it was relegated to a backup keyboard.

3s-gtech Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I'm pretty good with this stuff, not too many wasted purchases. I did buy XP Media Centre Edition with the remote control which has never been used - it will work perfectly still with newer versions of Windows though so may have a use for it in my new house. Bought a few things for car audio projects that didn't wok out - screens, keyboards and mice for car PCs, etc. All superseded by using a decent Android phone!
davethetekkie Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Not that I personally owned it but we had a Technics Digital Compact Cassette player at home years ago... My dad worked in service for Panasonic and it was one of many orphaned bits of equipment that never caught on (we also had a 3DO...).
NokiX Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I got myself a USB mini fridge thinking it would be useful to keep my can cold while I'm drinking it, I used it once and now it's just sat on my desk at work with a pot of screws on top so it lasted all of an hour or two!

They were really expensive (around £300) and took a long time to set up. I think I used them for a total of about 10 hours as they gave me a massive headache. Still have them in a box somewhere. I also have a DX1 keyboard which is honestly amazing but has not been support for a long time so can't get win7 drivers or software for it. I used it years ago for a short while then when I moved house it got boxed up and never used again since. I would love you get it working again but writing working drivers and control software for it is beyond me.
localzuk Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 Xbox 360. Used it for about 8 hours total then sold it (those 8 hours spread out over about 4 months). Just couldn't get on with a console.

I would love you get it working again but writing working drivers and control software for it is beyond me. A mate had a pair in 2003 or so. Nvidia specific - went with his godawful FX 5800. They were active shutter, but the refresh rate of his CRT was so low that it hurt like hell to use. May have been better with a 120Hz model, but the FX series were poor and struggled to get the high frame rates needed. It was all a bit premature really.

I donated to a charity shop in 2001 in it's original box, unopened. I don't do gadgets. I also have a Sharp Zaurus which my friend bought in the late 1990s, but he didn't like it and he gave it to me. I've used it once or twice to ftp into my PC via USB. (This was before I had a network port.) I dust it every week as it lives on my monitor stand.

Used a model A as part of uni work for a robot controlled by Web interface but other than that I've not used any of them. Keep planning to make a media device or something but then I bought a firetv stick so have even less reason for it now.

sted Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I also own a Wii U. most used console i own atm though granted i am mainly playing virtual console games on it going through fire emblem games i diddnt know about in gba days and currently zelda a link to the past either im worse at it than years ago as i suck or its harder lol got an internet radio my biggest gripe is if my router reboots about half the time absolute radio wont then play it thinks im not in the uk and thats with bt as an isp how much more British could my isp be?

rich_tech Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 The two main standout pieces I owned and was lucky to get rid of without incurring any losses were a Sega Dreamcast and a Sony Minidisk recorder, managed to own both and get rid of them within 6 months without losing major cash, stuck both on eBay and broke even. Even took the dreamcast online but its 33.6 modem was awful. Mobile phones - I was one of the first 3 customers in the UK when they were just out and owned at least 3 of their range of handsets, all were massive and heavy things with their 3G, would have stayed but they made their PaYG service a rip off after a few short months. Bought the wife a Wii which hasn't been connected now for about 2 years as well and my chromebook is also resigned to sitting here since I bought my Ret Macbook Pro
