I don't mean to cause offense, but there is a not so fine line between getting the most out of something and flogging a dead horse :p

but in all seriousness, do they still work, size capacity aside, surely they're not fit for purpose

No offense taken but yes they do. The software is not that tasking just that the bloated windows installation and subsequent updates takes up most of the space. No budget for replacements until next year maybe??/ Edited by JATSO

I've been umming and arring about whether to ask and i'm probably being cheeky to ask, but would either of you (@sted or @3s-gtech) be willing (and whether your schools are willing) to send me a dozen of these new(ish) drives for the price of postage (or whatever?)

If not, it's not a problem but I'd like to put drives like that to good use instead of just scrapping them.

the problem with that is i work for the school not part of the school so i cant give them away or really sell them as they are in no way mine to get rid of though i can use them

Id just whack the majority of them into caddies and make them externals.. the rest I would probs put into PC's as a recovery disk using something like Acronis to create A recovery environment / Acronis Safe Zone.

I'd open a few up for some IT classes to have a poke around in.

Buy some USB caddies and put the drive in (possibly give to teachers?)

Put some in a cheap/reused pcs and set up a stand alone server that the kids can play with. Possibly learning about RAID's, backups etc.

Sell on ebay as "sold as seen" Buy it now or best offer for £15-£45 depending on sizes and condition. that way you can just mark how many you have on one add, rather than lots of individual adds.

Give them to the art department.

Cheeky option... - sell a 250GB+ one to me so I can hopefully fix my poorly PS3 ;-)

if your dt department has a laser cutter apparently they are a good replacement for the mirrors in those. they don't fog up quite so bad when it gets caught on fire.

In the old days when RAID was first a thing it stood for

Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks

so any old cheap or old disks could be chucked into an array and used

which annoyed marketing departments as they wanted to sell new disks - and add on sales on the trendy RAID stuff

so they changed it to

Redundant Array of Independent Disks

which is different

so - using the old concept - you would have a controller that would use 10-20 old small disks and make them function as a single disk - using the number of spindles to overcome the slower speed of each old tech disk

seemed like a good idea

but less profitable

heh hoh
