I'm still seeing this now with 6 hours to the start of school. We cannot get rid of this service fast enough.

That's been saying that since Friday. I just hope it's a problem with their monitoring software.

Reports of slow internet today .... any suggestions for alternative providers? (we have Smoothwall if that helps...)

Zen Internet. Best thing we ever did. However I have heard good reports about @SchoolsBroadband

Lots of reports of slow here as well, a Kerboodle sign-up session this morning was a bit of a disaster.

Going to reboot our proxy servers tonight but my staff.proxy connection isn't great either.

We found ourselves caught up in a DDoS attack (DNS amplification) from China against a number of Russian websites last week. If you have the ability to monitor the activity on your WAN link you may wish to check whether you're being affected by something similar. Symptoms included extremely slow or intermittent DNS resolution resulting in extremely slow Internet access.

Exposing a recursive DNS resolver to the outside world is a very bad idea - not only does it mean you can be used as a DDoS amplifier, but it also opens you up to the possibility of DNS poisoning to redirect your own users to malicious websites. As always, make sure you understand which services you're exposing to the internet, and close off any you don't need.

We've seen quite a lot more network traffic than normal over the past few days but that's because schools come back, turn on their PC's and iPads they may not have done for ages and download a billion updates for Windows and IOS.

You should see the bandwidth graphs and what traffic goes where, very interesting.

Ref an open recursive DNS @SteveHill is correct, that's a really really bad idea......

If you have your own web caching on-site (Smoothwall, squid, dansguardian et al) then I suggest you contact them to opt out of using their cache farm and have your proxy server IP set to run straight through. We did it a couple of weeks ago and our service has been flying ever since. Some of my teachers even bought me cake so great is the "new" service.....

There have been serious problems in Somerset for the past few days - the transparent HTTPS proxy has been more or less dead (we were seeing speeds of 17Kbps yesterday at multiple schools - i.e. dial-up modem speeds) despite RM's status page saying that it is "stable" and one of our customers has had a complete outage since yesterday morning (BT network problems, apparently affecting other schools too - luckily they have an ADSL line as a backup). As far as I'm aware, there are still ongoing DNS problems with Somerset's DNS server (but that one is specifically Somerset, not SWGfL).

I'm hearing a lot of complaints at the moment, quite a few schools looking elsewhere for their Internet access. That said, SWGfL have proven to be relatively responsive to complaints on Twitter. :)

We haven't seem to have had the other issue you have - maybe because we are with a different broadband provider, but the proxy did just drop out for a couple of minutes

Just had it drop out again for a few minutes - no response from the proxy servers.

This is getting beyond the joke now.

Agreed - just had the same here. Can't get away from SWGfL fast enough now.
