OMG This is a new kind of PC

OK, I always set aside a small budget for my skunk works or (let see what this is like) So I invested in the fastest HDD I could muster. I was going to build a super fast WSUS machine.. I purchased the Kingston Predator PCIe HyperX 240GB 1400MB/s read 600 Write.

 

I plopped it into an old HP ML110 (So not PCIE2, so a hit on its top speed out the bat) I installed server 2012R2 (in like 15 minutes) already looking good... Anyhow it's the logon times that blew me away... I haven't run a speed test on this drive yet (I expect a penalty because of the bus type) but my crusty old login is just stunning... it's like looking a time lapse of a normal login all the same things happen but without any delay the whole PC runs like that... It is like no PC I've used before....

 

Anyhow early testing and just WOW... I may get one for my home PC...

 

£200 for 240GB though!

because until fairly recently processing power and lack of memory have been the bottlenecks as they have been improved the hdd has become the bottleneck I wouldn't have a pc/laptop without one these days

Correct me if I'm wrong but that doesn't look like a proper PCI SSD instead it looks like it's an M2 SSD attached to a PCI adapter. Surely this would mean you're only getting M2 SSD Read / Write speeds?

M.2 uses PCI-E lanes. So long as the SSD on the adaptor is fast enough, there's no reason why M.2 SSD Read/Write speeds would be any lower. The interface isn't the bottleneck there. The older PCI-E slot on the board may well be the limiting factor. Can't help thinking it'd be cheaper to buy the card and SSD separately, but meh.

M.2 has can be PCIe - the connector was designed as part of "SATA Express", which supports much higher speeds. Eg. it could use 2 PCIe 3.0 lanes to get 1969MB/s top speed, compared to about 600MB/s for SATA3.

Ah interesting cheers guys. My motherboard on my desktop at home has a place to put an M2 SSD onto the board directly. Would this be much faster than the Samsung 840 Evo I currently have in there?

It depends on the device you plug in, and whether the M.2 socket is actually full SATA Express or not I think!

Sorry for click bait title.. a total mistake, I promise this was just the way I felt after 20 minutes with this server, it's a cruddy old ML110 with a opteron quad @ 2.3Ghz with 512kb cache and 4gb of ddr2 ECC ram.. and it flies! I'm just like wow...

 

BTW I was never worried about the M2 conversion, I'd heard they were super fast and I didn't get anymore technical than that... This thing shames my SATA based SSDs.
