I recently built myself a gaming rig which cost me rather more than I had wanted but well worth every penny. The issue is my 8 year old is wanting to play some steam games so I would like to build him a separate system. I got given an old small form factor dell pc, but this only has on board graphics (no reall expansion room) and even stutters playing Minecraft, so I am now thinking of building him a cheap rig.

Anyone seen any cheap pre built rigs that would run some of the steam games on medium settings or have any advice.

OS I have covered as I have full Win7 pro on DVD.

Thanks for the info. Out of interest what graphics card would you recommend based on my OP.

I was looking at the nvidia cards but the numbers 570 etc really mean nothing to me.

Would a 2gb card be OK?

How cheap is cheap

I was thinking of starting at £300 as I can get second hand bits etc like HDD's, memory etc. and then in 6 month time add something a bit newer.

Probably need to buy

Case

Graphics card

processor

PSU

I have got

HDD

memory

OS

Keyboard

Mouse

£300 is doable. You could build a machine based on AMD Kaveri (FM2+) in that budget, which would play most games fine at medium detail up to 1080p with money to spare for an SSD. Otherwise, that budget will get you an LGA1150 Pentium, motherboard, 8GB of RAM and something like a R9 270X which will do pretty nicely.

Might be worth contacting @ICTDirect_Dave as he's usually got some great deals on PCs.

:)

How about a barebones Dell T5500 workstation Chassis?

Intel Xeon W5590 3.33GHz Quad Core CPU

8GB PC3-10600R RAM

MSI GeForce GTX 750OC 2GB GDDR5 (VGA, DVI, HDMI)

DVDRW

£300 Inc VAT & delivery :)

I built my gaming rig for £130 using used parts:

i3 2120

ITX Asus board

4GB RAM

GTX750ti

ITX case

Windows 7 Licence

I say gaminbg, it plays what I want on medium settings, I'm not as big a nerd as I used to be, all money goes on cars now

By all means, come test us out :)

He means 'try', try him out...

'Test' is what I do to him:

"I know it's not on your website, and you've never had any before, but can you get me 50 of $Thing, and I don't want to pay more $amount for it"

He's not been found wanting yet. :D

PS, how is the research for those monitors going?
