So I have myself a nice shiny new server to start setting up and transfering stuff across from the old server. But because the old server will still be live etc I need to come up with a new name, and it's harder than you think.

So I was wondering if any of you lovely people have given your servers some awesome epic names or just gone for names based on the schools name?

Plus if you can come up with some epic names then go for it :)

Edit: Don't need a naming scheme as there aren't loads of server, only the old one and new one so there will be 2 names that I need to remember what they do and are :)

I used to use Futurama names, but my technician got upset as he could never remember which server did what (Hermes was the license managing server - how simple is that?!).

So now, our servers are named functionally - NODE1, NODE2, KMS, DC1, DC2, PRINT etc...

Generally logical boring names

e.g. (First 3 your school abbreviations)

XYZ-DC1

XYZ-FILE1

XYZ-HELP

etc

Steve

That's what they have already as I took it over from an outsourced company they had the name dc$schoolname$pc. But I have never really liked that name.

One school I look after all the servers were named after kids TV characters

Its safe to say after the network upgrade they weren't.

Just use somthing like an abreviation of the school name ***-DC-01 ***-FS-01 ***-PS-01 etc ***-MIS-01

All our virtual server names are named as

NAPVS01

NAPVS02

NAPVS03

ect

Our Host servers are given proper names as they are not referenced by users

Axiom (named after the ship in WallE)

Horizon (named after the ship in the film Event Horizon)

Origin (named after the religion in StarGate)

Olympic (named after the Olympics hosted in the UK at the time of purchase)

Stormbreaker (named after .......can you guess?)

I'm sure there is another thread on this topic ;-)

All of ours start with a 4 character site code, the rest is what they do and what number they are [mostly all "001", it's in case we ever get duplicates].

HST-001

HST-002

SRV-001

SRV-002

APP-001

APP-002

FIL-001

BCK-001

ESG-001

EWC-001

RDH-001

Cool names only work if you remember what they do, or if you have something that tells you what they do.

Yes, beyond a very small setup (say a home lab) you need a functional systematic naming scheme.

It is only a small primary school with one server running everything so a naming scheme isn't really needed.

When we migrated our servers, we moved from the RM method of XXX-SR-XX to XXX-DC-XX, and then used XXX-MS-XX for our member servers.

You could add or subtract some characters from the current system

Oh... name it after me then. :p

We use School name abbreviation

DMS-DC-01

DMS-DC-02

DMS-DC-03

DMS-FILE-01

DMS-FILE-02

DMS-APP-01

DMS-MIS-01

For machines names we use building so for Main Block, Room 9, PC1 we use

MB-R9-01

Edit: Although my Virtual test server is called Geoff. For lulz

Yep - Definatly boring names are going to help.

When i got here they were all name after greek gods. I just remembered the IP's instead.

When i wiped the old domain and started a new one i was always being asked what the new names were going to be as they were hoping for something cool.

I replied, not sure yet but youl never get to see them as im setting things up properly.

Or call it SchoolName1 if you have just the one server

No. Not it's not. Call it onh9a7645hfo78645098qw7o465hpt98ah46987we5php5y6.

See? Easy. That's one more than onh9a7645hfo78645098qw7o465hpt98ah46987we5php5y5 which is what you should rename the old server to so you remember.

Ours is after star consolations

Think it would be easier to remember the IP addresses in the case...

University of Warwick Computing Society called the servers after various IT people.

Arora, Backus (for backups), Codd, Dijkstra and Estridge.

Here it's just Schools initials - server function, such as AAA-DC1, AAA-Remote, AAA-MIS and the likes.

Haven't got that far yet! It's fun to match server to names though.

I worked for Tameside Council and some of their servers were named after budget supermarkets! All software installers were stored on Lidl, technical staff shares on Aldi, helpdesk on Kwik-save etc.

Have the best of both systems. Give the servers interesting names, then add the service/role names as CNAMEs. That way you can name them after the characters of 50 shades, but refer to them by DC01, DC02, SIMS, etc.

Using CNAMEs also gives scope to split services to separate servers later with minimal config changes, just change the CNAME.

That's epic!

Used to be geological names for all our servers here (Baslat, Quartz, Feldspar, Obsidian, Granite, Nebula, Sandstone, Opal, Gabbro and for reasons unknown Vitrophyre!!) as the previous NW Manager clearly thought it would impress the HT (who teaches Geology...) Slowly been phasing that naming scheme out as servers get replaced, much more boring names these days like XYZ-MAIL, XYX-DC1 etc Edited by AJWhite1970
