From a mag I like to read "Computerworld".

Field technician is on the team deploying new systems to a group of hospitals and clinics where most users are old and not very computer-literate.

"One day, we were sitting in our office between deployments, going through the help desk tickets forwarded to us," says tech."As we joked about users saying 'keyboard needs to be remapped' and a user who couldn't get a CD out of his 'hard drive', we came across one job that stated a user's PC had started smoking and caught fire. Not entirely believing, we went down to check it out - and actually found a scorched PC case and motherboard in a room that smelled strongly of smoke and burnt plastic. From that point on, we took the users' input slightly more seriously."

Hehehe... I'm wondering on which PC they submitted the job!!!

We had a WAP start smoking here, I think that someone had used a wrong power cable for it and it overloaded. The smell hung around for days!

Love the IT crowd, ep 1 of series 2 was funny as hell.

BTW, any more fires, better call 0118 999 88199 9119725......................3

That's an easy enough number to remember!

I've had a newly installed modem "catch fire". A tantalum bead capacitor shorted out internally and started emitting (probably toxic) white smoke. It was so hot that it was glowing and, at first sight, I thought it was a yellow LED.

I've had a PC Speaker catch fire before in my home PC. I shut the PC down as normal and then the fans went CRAZY and I mean CRAZY it sounded like it was taking off, screens went black then all this smoke started billowing out of the case and I went S**T and whipped the power out and the side off and saw the speaker and its cable smouldering away, it got thrown out of the window, don't know waht casued it the mobo was fine the next day but the speaker and cable had become carbonous.

I have had flames shoot out of the back of a PSU. I was leaning over the case as I turned it on listening to see of the fan was starting up. The customer was just telling me as I did it there was a strange noise from it before. My face felt heated put it that way. I also recoiled so quick I knackered my back for the rest of the day
