truebluesteve Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 So I find myself in the position of being on my own this year :Cry:and I am considering my holiday options for the summer. I was considering a group holiday with other billy-no-mates or maybe doing something by myself but I'm not really sure. Anyone got any suggestion/recommendations/experiences they'd care to share? I have looked at Trek America and similar and although I'd love to it, I might leave it until next year (I have a significant birthday in November ) I'm fairly easy where I go, as long as its warm and sunny and has some cultural interest. My age rules me out of 18-30 holidays! Cheers
abillybob Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Portugal is lovely and has been my holiday of choice just for relaxing. Though Malta is great also if you like exploring and stuff, has a lot of World War 2 camps and underground shelters you can view which is very interesting. I've always wanted to go to Japan as well, I hear it's a lovely place to go to and is truly a one-off experience. 1

Plan something similar this year but am saving to goto Iran next year to experience ancient Persia. 1
truebluesteve Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Finding myself old free and single last year I took up a new hobby and bivvy bagged along the SW cost path for a week (sleeping without a tent) and also went to a couple of music festivals. Plan something similar this year but am saving to goto Iran next year to experience ancient Persia. The SW coast thing has occurred to me before although perhaps using YHA. Either way I need to get away from Crawley :-)

Or as has been mentioned, do a host of UK festivals, the smaller ones though, you can do more, for less and get all around the place 2

Not sure in your music tastes but Cropredy festivel is very friendy, great food, real ale but mostly folk based or theirs Rambling Man this year which is Rock, Blues and Prog based.

You'll be able to find plenty of places to pitch off of the beaten track I'm sure - Or you can just drop down to beach level and have your own personal haven for the night. There are several stretches that are MOD land however and you'll have to find a camp site for these bits as they like to conduct live fire test exercises at night! Still most camp sites in the area cost little more than a fiver a night

When was younger, I was fortunate to got 2-3 times a year. Stopping in one of my favorite places (Carbis Bay), last couple holidays have been in Perranporth.

Above would be my plan, perhaps substituting tent for hotel though! 1

unixman_again Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Take in the Edinburgh fringe and festival. It's very cultural, although you'll spend all of your time indoors. You can see 8 shows a day - I know 'cus I've done it. If you like comedy, you can probably see even more. I don't see any of the comedy - I much prefer to see the dance and plays. 1

Towards the end of last year I booked a week in Arisaig which turned out to be one of the nicest breaks I've had in a long time. Even the 600 mile drive to get there was reasonably pleasant. 2
truebluesteve Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 I love Cornwall (pasties even more) I was in Cornwall last week (Treyarnon Bay near Padstow) as part of a year 12 Geography trip. Its a beautiful place -as is Cornwall generally, and I would probably do any camping etc in that region

Arisaig is a stunning part of the world. We used to regularly rent out a farmhouse up the road in Glenancross. Gorgeous part of the world! Great fishing on the beaches too.

IIRC, the Top Gear boys tried this, and found that it wasn't the great idea that it sounded at the start... Having said that, you might not have so much trouble if you avoid driving through 'sensitive' states with makeshift provocative car sign writing!

Route 66.......iconic, famous and you can listen to the Stones all the way with impunity. New Orleans to San Francisco across the south, is the one I really fancy. Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, on to California from Arizona or through Nevada. Otherwise, you have other 'iconic' road-movie trips. Denver to San Francisco in 60 hours (Vanishing Point, not recommended) or the non-existent 'Interstate 60'. Interstate 60: Episodes of the Road (2002) - IMDb Definitely go on your own. 1

On a visit to the States during my Navy days, a number of the crew hired from 'rent-a-wreck' and many soon discovered that getting out of the parking lot was an achievement. Me and 3 of my mess mates hired a new convertible and had much more fun! The US road trip is very very appealing!
