Ahh but then you have the dilemma of which chapter?  Some chapters even have their own codices.

Yep, it's not cheap. Though you can often get kit up to 25% off from retailers rather than direct from GW. I mostly use Wayland Games and Hobby Workshop.

 

It's well known that 2,000 point armies, though that's what the game is balanced around, do represent a significant financial investment, which is why there are slightly tweaked rules for 1,000 point games, and why the Combat Patrol gamemode exists. 

 

You can often save some good money buying the bigger box sets (also called Combat Patrol.. Also the magazine is called Combat Patrol.. Just don't ask). They also occasionally do other boxes for narrative purposes, or usually around Christmas. A bunch of armies just got a Maelstrom box which all provides decent savings too.

I'm sure you'll be recommended the 'Contrast' paint range to start out with, espeicially with some Space Marines. It's a paint that you're meant to just glob on: nice and quick painting. It's designed to have a very particular viscosity and flow properties, so that it pools into recesses to automatically give you shadows and highlights across the model, rather than having to paint all those affects yourself with a tiny brush.

 

Yes, it can seem expensive, but if you enjoy the painting side of things, you can really go to town and wring every penny out of your purchases. Also, since Space Marines are always part of any boxed set, eBay generally have tonnes of unwanted Space Marine kits.

 

I've always found Games Workshop's designs so fascinating. Everything is always a lovely melting pot of influences, and it's especially satisfying when those influences seem miles apart, but somehow get brought together to gel. For instance, I never would have thought that Abe's Odysee and Transformers would necessarily go well together, yet they kinda do when you look at T'au. Similarly, body horror, 1950's Soviet nuclear power station aesthetic and the hand-drawn sketches of Leonardo Da Vinci all come together in the delightful madness that is the Adeptus Mechanicus.

 

It's expensive but the IP and design work is exceptionally good.

Yep! I, myself, have the Marine half of Leviathan sat at home doing nothing 😅 The Mrs has enjoyed painting them wacky and wonderful colours to practice painting on, she's enjoying the painting, though she has no real interest in 40k desire to actually play the game so I just buy her random resin prints every now and again, dragons and mushroom people and whatnot.

It is ferociously expensive!  My buying power now is not too dissimilar from when i was a pimply-faced teenager with no income back at the turn of the millenium!

 

Having said that, don't buy direct from GW unless you have no other option.  Hobby stores offer decent discounts and usually have a loyalty programme you can join too.

If you can hop across to Cardiff the firestorm games are a great one to visit.

So the visit to the Warhammer shop in Swansea was great. Luke the Manager was very encouraging in what he offered. I bought a small Space Marine 3 figure kit with some paints for £22.50 and issue 518 of White Dwarf - which was he history celebration issue. Not read it yet. I also looked at pricing for an Ultimate Starter Set - £130.

 

Later that evening I approached a mate who runs a local business and he agreed to give our club £200 to purchase the Ultimate Starter kit + some other consumables like paints, glue, brushes etc. We also have another local business who is willing to give us some cash to build our school team. I've not opened my figures yet - I'll wait until Wednesday so the kids can be involved with my nervous excitement.

 

Exciting times for this 51 year old!

Can wholeheartedly support the recommendation of Firestorm. Between them and Element Games, they're pretty much my two go-to's if I'm buying anything official (although, truth be told, since my friend bought his 3D printer that's becoming less and less these days!).

 

But agreed that there's absolutely no reason to buy from the beast itself, as virtually every 3rd party store either has what you want in stock, or can order it themselves from GW. So it might take a couple of weeks longer to arrive, but it'll save around 15-20%.

 

The starter sets are usually great for several reasons - usually they're pretty good value, plus they include all the basics you'll need. Wargamer did a decent article on the various flavours of starter box currently available:

What's the best Warhammer 40k starter set to get in 2026? 

 

Though I would definitely highlight the '11th Edition' paragraph as worth paying attention to - chances are the rules are about to change in the summer (though probably not massively), so it might be worth holding out if you can as there'll probably be new starter boxes coming in the summer.

Great to hear, I haven’t played tabletop games for a good few years now and want to get into another tabletop game. Thinking of getting into Warhammer myself! I was a massive fan of tabletop X-Wing, played a bit of v2 and now sadly it’s collapsed completely and no longer supported. With Armada, as far I’m aware, being the only similar game.

Depending on your flavour of fiction there's a lot to enjoy right now.

 

I'm a particular fan of classic warhammer fantasy.  Rank and file with square bases just sing to me in ways most other games don't.

To that end, Warhammer: The Old World is a glorious game that has an awful lot going for it.

 

If you're a fan of space games, there's a bit of a gap right now so I'm in the middle of developing my own ruleset for fleet action games. 18,500 words and counting, but it should allow for an original take on tabletop space ship games.

I'm working on fitting some classic scifi factions into the rules for playtesting so there will be plenty that's familiar from the off.

Before I go searching the various 3D printing sites - does anyone have a 'go-to' site where they download 3D files for scenery that is suitable for W40K? I'm on Thingiverse but just wondered if anyone had their favourite sites.

I get most of my 3D prints off of myminifactory.com although this is for models rather than terrain, but I know a few of the creators I buy from also do terrain so it should be possible to find.

cults3d is a goldmine.  There's a lot out there but it's hard to search for warhammer 40k and find exactly what you want.

 

Games Workshop are nothing if not zealous with the banhammer even if stuff is clearly original designs and only slightly inspired by the setting.

The minis look cool.  Especially the Orks.

 

But I'm still unlikely to be a fan of the rules, given they're an evolution of 10th.

 

Still, it's always exciting to get a new edition, and the boxset is usually great value.

I'm cautiously optimistic, especially with the changes to terrain. Too often it's far too easy to get people up to 3+ or 2+ saves so changing that to a hit modifier instead of a save modifier sounds better (RIP Orks with their 5+ ballistic skill). Reserving judgement until we get more actual info, though. I've been happy with 10th for the most part (I feel like looking back on it, my main gripe has been with vehicles and having 10-billion guns)

I'm realising now that I've never actually played a game of 9th or 10th, apart from a couple of games of Boarding Actions. I have the 2nd edition box set, which the artwork for that 11th edition box is definitely a re-run of (it's like the original artwork has been put through a filter). Only two minis to look at so far, but I'm getting 2nd edition vibes and will likely be drawn towards a purchase. Hopefully it won't have a cardboard Ork Dreadnought this time.

 

EDIT:

The new box artwork looks to include grots/gretchin in the same WW1 style helmets as the originals. I've painted a LOT of those, so hopefully any new ones will offer a lot more variety and dynamism.

Those are awesome!  I've a bunch of tyranid stls that I've never quite got around to printing.

 

I'm knocking out some Orks at the moment.  It's been twenty five years since i last painted one and it's good to get the green paints out again!

Obviously these are just the basic rules, and more bits and pieces are forthcoming, but they're there if anyone wants to read through them.

Not an engaged tabletop battler but am currently DM'ing an Imperium Maledictum TTRPG weekly. For those who aren't aware it is one of the varied flavours of W40k inspired RPG's from Cubicle 7

Faction packs are available too (kind of like the indexes they put up for 10th, but only focusing on the new bits, so they read more like an errata.. modifications to keywords, etc) 

Loyalist, Xenos and Heretic factions out already with the rest of the Imperium due today.

 

As a primarily 'nids and Drukhari player, I am thoroughly whelmed. Reaper's Wager and Subterranean Assault are both 3DP so not a whole lot changes for me, although I am toying around with the idea of Crusher Stampede + Ambush Predators.

 

Coincidentally enough, in the run up to 11th I've set up a Discord server for UK 40K for us grown-ups with boring life commitments and other stuff that gets in the way of. The focus is on getting games in online via Tabletop Simulator. If that's up your alley, give me a DM and I'll drop you the invite

Subterranean Assault & Invasion Fleet both being 3DP was entirely predicable though in all honesty. They're by far and away the best detachments that 'Nids currently have, outside of going super niche assimilation swam or similar.

 

I had already toyed around with moving my list to a Crusher Stampede to allow me to also take the Norn one, although doing so doesn't particularly bring much as the detachment doesn't massively bolster my Emissaries (seems more geared up for Assimilator's rather than Emissaries), but I guess it's free at 2,000 so why not?
