I would take the netapp over the hp any day support is a million times better. It automatically email there support for you! And they call you! If you are looking for something small tho look at dell, when I looked it was cheaper. They even did some all in one chassis with servers perfect for a single solution

Under 24k for a CS220 with gigabit Ethernet install and just a years support at the time. I know nimble did us good deal as they had not long entered the UK market but I was hoping they would maintain discounted pricing for schools.

Ah ok, well they redid their product lineup and renamed everything in the middle of last year i think, the CS220 is now the CS215 (maybe some small differences mind in product revision) which i was recently quoted on for quite a bit less than that, so they're still doing good pricing!

EDIT: to answer the question in the posts above, definitely wouldn't recommend going with the hp msa2040, i've looked into this one quite abit recently too. You're better off with almost anything else mentioned in this thread tbh :p although their next firmware is adding auto tiering which is good but still the product is miles off the performance of most the things in this thread.

No not looked at the dell. Looked at Nimble (too expensive at 27k), netapp (16k) and MSA2040 same ish price as netapp

Which model were you quoted £27k for?

That's encouraging, i wish vendors where a little more transparent when it comes to list pricing, specs and features as I've always found it very difficult to do side by side comparisons with SANs, resellers can have wildly variable pricing as well which somewhat clouds things.

general conclusion seems to be that HP are poor, EMC's support has been flakey recently but the product is otherwise brilliant, Dell are 50/50 depending on what device you're after (poor opinions shared over equalogic line, good ones shared about compellant line) .... nothing but positive opinions on nimble from the support and product side of things. A few other recommendations i'd been given but those were the main ones.

Obviously can't recommend a specific device without lots of information but i'd say speak to EMC (Quite a few people can supply them, novatech for one who are sorting me a quote for a VNXe 3200) pretty sure I'm going to end up going with a Nimble CS215 + 10GB option though at the moment unless the VNXe really sells itself to me.

Aye currently running an older VNXe currently, but thought while we need a replacement might as well look at all alternatives :) Got a call setup with them later this week to see what they're offering.

Love our Nimble but the prices people are looking at now vs what we where quoted a less than 18 months ago look to have inflated somewhat which is a bit of a worry in the future and pushes them out of reach for many which is a shame.

Aye really looks like Nimble forerunner currently, just a shame they are that much more expensive, and when we honestly don't know if VDI will fit into the budget seems a shame to be spending the money if it's not needed, but then again who knows where we will be 5 years down the line.

Could do with getting some of my cash back so forget everything else buy Nimble!

Haha :) Buy some shares in all the SAN companies, win win :D

That's the thing though, we're quoted 2-3k a year support, so 5 years would be 30k+ compared to 15k Equallogic/alternative with 5 years support

Can anyone recommend NetApp? We had a quote for an E2700 with 24 x 1.2tb 10k sas for around £15k

Out of curiosity who was that off?

Aye it's annoying trying to find matching models/specs and then pricing haha :p Need a "standard" style of models haha :)

Thanks,

Steve

The netapp quote was a company call axess systems.

Its hard trying to digest all the info about the different systems including reviews and feedback and make a decision on that everything you hear. I think we are going to go with NetApp as the general consensus is that its miles better that the HP MSA2040. The Nimble is just too expensive for us at 27k with 3 years support.

Went through this process not to long ago and compared Nimble, EMC, HP and Netapp. In the end we went for Netapp and have a FAS2252HA.

The de duplication aspect is very effective as someone has already pointed out. Lots of things its capable of yet to use all the bells and whistles of it.

How you finding it? do you use it for VDI or just VM Servers?

Which model have you been quoted 27k for @techie08 ?

I can only assume it's a CS300? Because if it's the CS215 then i suggest you get another quote ;)

Is that just that model or your opinion on HP in general for SANs?

Just that model. Although i get the impression from advice i've been given while looking for similar products that in every price bracket of HPs products that there's something better being offered from nimble, netapp, emc etc. I've yet to have a positive opinion (and i've had a fair few given to me!) about HP in the storage area.

I've got the HP 4335 SAN end of last year which suited our situation running network raid 10 which was same as our Lefthand network solution we had installed 6 years a go. We paid £30k for dual units synced opposite end of the site for fire protection and they are HA/load balanced via cluster IP so have to say I'm happy with them so far and snapshot supported backups in Veeam work very well .

We use Netgear ReadyData 5200 SAN

20tb SAS (10x2tb SAS)

200gb MLC (Read) SSD and

50gb SLC (Write) SSD

Onboard dual 10GB

I think it gives about 14tb raw storage

Runs our Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster shared volume ( about 30 Virtual servers via 5 physical hosts ) for a sixth form college

We have a second one that is a direct replica at the opposite side of the campus.

Rough cost was 7k ex vat, which includes £700 each for the SSD drives. Comes with a 5yr warranty (inc the drives)

It blew our existing Dell Equalogic's out of the water ; replication, dedupe, compression, unlimited snapshots and block level clones all built in as standard.

Or an actual demo using the original interface - raid provisioning is rapid

Excellent to be honest, it just sits there working and doesnt require much attention at all. De duplication happens once a week, saved us over 1.6tbs the first time it was run which was quite impressive. Integrates well with VMware and is easily expandable in terms of additional hardware if required.

Run mostly VM Servers, got a few RDS servers for Citrix in there as well, but the SAN has the capability of a full VDI rollout as and when / if required which was part of the scope.

Hi Steve,

Please can we quote you for a Lenovo IBM V3700 SAN as this is very flexible intelligent SAN at a good price point. If you can provide with a spec you have in mind we will be more than happy to help.

We can also set up a webex with the IBM guys to show you the functionality and the management console if this would be of interest.

Kind regards

Stu

I was going to create a new thread when I stumble upon this; we are in a similar situation but looking for our first ever NAS drive, our first step towards centralised and unified storage world. The above posts have been really helpful in knowing different options available. I've looked at the Synology, EMC, nimble, QNAP and Netapp. There's lots to sync in and find the right solution for the school. Still reading, still searching, still wondering....

£7k total for both or each?

Phew. Thanks. I've just had a quote for more than that (for one) but it was for 10x3TB NL-SAS disks and 2xSSD.

Thought £7k for two was too good to be true ;)
