Anyone recommened larger HDD to smaller SSD cloning software?

Hi

 

We're soon going to be in the process of upgrading all of our laptops to SSD.

 

We use clonezilla for image deployment but moving from larger to smaller disks isn't something of which this does well.

 

Frustratingly the OCZ SSD's we've brought in don't come with cloning software.

 

Has anyone come across any software (preferably open source) that can clone any brand of SSD from a larger HDD?

 

Will save us a lot of time building and testing new images if we can do this.

If you're in an MS environment, I didn't think WDS was overly worried about different sized disks.

The recommended approach is to shrink an existing workstation partition, either through Windows 7's Computer Management or something third party.

 

If the SSDs you've purchased are say 60GB, I'd suggest capping the partition at 58GB or 1024 x 58 = 59392MB to be precise. You can then continue using Clonezilla or whatever as before.

Every imaging solution I've ever used didn't really care what size the drive was as long as it's be enough to hold the image; it shouldn't treat an SSD any differently than an HDD either. It isn't. WDS uses WIMs which are file based rather than sector based images. ImageX doesn't care what size the original volume was as long as the destination is big enough to hold the image.

Acronis true image home edition is brilliant for this. I bought an SSD with a free copy but you may well be able to use the 30 day trial to achieve the same results.

Symantec Ghost - I believe you can get it on a trial. I bought this product years ago and still use it now. Good old Ghost.
