Cheap, difficult to vandalise mouses

Doesn't matter how hard they are to break will just make the kids try harder to get their desired results. Work out what teachers are in the room when the they are getting damaged and then name and shame them, they will soon work out themselves who are vandalising things or better yet prevent it.

The room is occupied by pretty much just one member of staff (who is off at the moment, but the vandalism occurs rather heavily when that member of staff is in, too, it's not just because it's a supply teacher)

 

I've told said staff member when they called down in the past that it's not that the mouses 'aren't working' it's that the children are very purposefully vandalising them. I've shown them exactly what they do and it's impossible that you would do it by accident or just by idle fiddling. All of this has been done in a polite, informative "This is what's happening that stops them working so frequently" manner rather than a "Your kids are wrecking stuff. Your classroom management sucks. Sort it out." way, but still it persists.

We had an issue like this, we replaced the mice with "kid friendly" mice, they were horrible, multicolored, cheap and made of hard plastic. They quickly became the mice of shame and no teacher wanted them in the classroom, seemed to help the problem

Pass it up the line. At the end of the day it's not your job to manage pupils or other staff and if you lay it out to management that you're spending x amount per half term (or per term if you want to make the number more of an issue) just on mice and that almost all of that is from a specific classroom (perhaps start documenting when you replace mice there and how many) then they should take a closer look at it.

Start charging the department for replacement mice, we had this at a school and the students started getting billed for damage and there was certainly less damage after that.

That too. We also bill the departments for damage. The HoDs come down pretty hard on anyone who costs them money now!

We've started as of yesterday keeping track of how many we replace in this particular room, but whether the figure will be large enough to make an impact, I'm not sure. The mouses we use right now are fairly cheap anyway (not sure on exact price) so we'll have to see.

Childrens Mice

We're using Logitech £3.50 a pop things. As has been said many a time already, it's down to supervision and we're not worried about saying that. However we do also have CCTV in the ICT suites and individuals will be caught & made an example of. As a result, damage is minimal.

Each camera costs around £100 and probably saves us several times that a year in vandalism.
