Hello,

I've been having problems with 25 Macs since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite. The problem that when I load them up they stick at 40-50% and will either stop until I turn it off again or shut itself down. I don't know what's causing this and currently the only method I know which fixes the problem is to use option-cmd p+r to reset PRAM and then boot up in safe mode and restart again and it all works fine.

But this happens daily and I can't be going into the same room everyday to fix the same problem so I was wondering whether any of you have had a similar problem or know a way of fixing it and for it to not happen again and always load flawlessly. It only seems to be since the Yosemite upgrade that it does this as they would boot every time in Mavericks.

As for Mac models there are 16 2010 iMacs and 8 brand new iMacs and this problem happens on them all.

Hopefully someone will be able to help me with this problem as it's getting a bit frustrating having to fix the same issue.

I've performed the same upgrade recently without any issue on some 2008 Macs which were running Mavericks. Have you tried doing a clean install? All I can think of is you have something installed which may not be entirely Yosemite compatible.

Its a mixture of clean installs and upgrades. But its not always the same computer it changes between those that have clean installs and those that are upgrades. Maybe there is something that is not compatible with Yosemite though. Its just strange that its only at the boot up. Once I get it on and login everything works fine. It just sticks sometimes at the boot.

Any external devices? I have a couple of 2009 iMacs that did this with Mbox 2 and Mbox Mini drivers. Clean out of the drivers and a reinstall of older ones seems to have helped, but I doubt I've seen the last of it. Nothing Avid made works properly on 10.10 (big surprise).

That's what I thought, the only externals are the keyboard and mice. I guess no one is going to know a solution, I'll probs let stumble across it eventually

We have been experiencing exactly the same issue. We recently performed a fresh install on our Mac Server and suite of iMacs, MacBooks and Mac Mini's with Yosemite. At some point they have started intermittently failing to boot with the same progress bar issue but it seems random. We can start a room of Macs 15 times and only see the problem once or twice. Doing the PRAM reset works sometimes but not every time. The start up log (CMD+V) doesn't seem to give anything obvious away so we've started thinking it's incompatible software or profile manager as it's something they all have in common. Our own personal Mac devices are not seeing this issue.

Same issue here! We’ve done a clean install of 10.10 done the PRAM reset and this fix and tried repair permissions utility but still no joy. I do believe as others have said it’s something to do with Mbox 2 and Mbox Mini boxes we have. I think a good test for us is to boot some up with just a keyboard and mouse and no external devices plugged and see how we get on.

I had this problem on my iMac Mid 2011 at work. I had updated to Yosemite from Mavericks. I did have the start-up issue where the load percentage capped out at 50%. I restarted several times and even left it up all night, but it never completely loaded. I decided to try the Safe mode and finally got the computer up and proceeded to run Permissions verifications and repairs. Afterward, I restarted again and have had no issues with the restart. This computer is on a company-wide server with approximately 20 Macs or which 5 or so have Yosemite and 2 of us have complaints still about the operation capacities of the OS. More questions regarding the server interaction. Hope I find answers on that soon.

I think we have solved it. When I did repair permissions it was coming up with a printer error. We had the printers deployed via Profile manager. I now deploy them via workgroup manager and installed the latest driver via remote desktop .pkg and now all of them are booting up in less than 20 seconds. Not sure if it’ll help anyone else but worth looking at what happens when you try and repair permissions.

We've had exactly the same issue today with our Mac in our office.

Reset PRAM and booted into Safe Mode and ran disk check and permissions check and up to now it's sorted it.

We got the same error as @Mark182 and we don't even have any printers allocated when running the permissions check.

Also having this issue, started off with just a few MacBooks, but now the issue seems to be affecting around 90% of them.

Off to try the solution provided :D

Not checked recently on our Sandybridge Mac Mini and MacBook Pros, but the older 2009 iMacs that I did have been awful. One seems to work okay now, the other I'm doing a fresh install because it would constantly hang. 10.10.1 has to be worth a pop - it's a big update.

I think we have finally found a resolution. Using the Etrecheck tool, available from Etresoft, it highlighted several plist files that might have been the cause. We had already removed the Impero Application (version 4.2.14) as a test thinking it might have been the cause but had not removed its associated files. Since removing the three invalid files listed below from the machines we have seen a 100% startup success rate for a few days now on all of our Macs. Our next step, is to provide feedback to Impero, if it is proven that Impero was causing the issue. We have enabled the Remote Management service on the machines in the meantime.

Very interesting - we don't have Imperio but have had the problem with Yosemite - so much so that we have gon back to Mavericks for the time being. Might give this a go and see if it throws up anything useful

Hmmmm, well this seemed to help for a few days, with faultless start-ups for all of our Macs but today they have all been starting to show the same issue again so it's back to square one.

This is driving me crazy, upgraded to 10.10.1 which seemed to have resolved the issue, but like most people with solution only lasted a few days.

Time to roll back? I think

In case its the same issue, this is being discussed on a load of other forums I visit:

From what I've seen its a combination of 10.10.x and Active Directory. Luckily 10.9.5 still works on most new Macs that are shipping (except Mac minis and 5k iMacs).

This appears to have fixed it for me.

Single User Mode

Cmd - S at boot.

bash-3.2# mount -uw /

bash-3.2# /usr/bin/nano /etc/rc.server

#!/bin/sh

/bin/echo BootCacheKludge Beta 1.0 - Chris Hotte 2015 - No rights/blame reserved.

/usr/sbin/BootCacheControl jettison

Ctrl-x to exit

save file

type reboot to restart.

Apparently going to be fixed in 10.10.3

If at all possible can you do a fresh re-image with the OS and not upgrade? I know Mac OS X handles upgrades better than Windows but here at the college I tell faculty that if they upgrade their Macs that they lose my support. I only support images from scratch and no full OS upgrades.

I have had a re-occurrence of the issue today, with the above script in place and working. It has certainly reduced the frequency of occurrence though.

A quick boot into safe mode fixed it.

Roll on the fix, Apple!
