Good work getting the job. Its funny that I am not the only one who wants a job in the real world.

Think you hit the role of IT manager in education exactly in your message and hope to find a job like yours in the next couple of years and become a real IT professional.

Good luck out there in The Real World - remember that EduGeek is not just for people who work in Education so you can still continue to post questions on here etc. :)

Thanks all - much appreciated.

Be interesting if you could post back in a few months to see if you actually prefer it. I have a few friends who work in the 'Real World' with IT Support jobs and they envy me because i get to play with so many different things. One is a Cisco engineer and he does Cisco routers, and Cisco Switches, thats it and hates that he cannot work on the Servers or the Clients it is purely the network infrastructure. Another is an Exchange admin for a big company but dislikes he is not allowed to do anything else, need something changing in AD the AD team has to deal with that. Where as us in Education IT normally have they keys to every device and system and get to be knowledgeable in many different areas.

One of my big nightmares is waking up to find that it is 10 years in the future and I have amnesia... and I still work at the school

It is and I do (still work here, that is) :(

Good luck in your new venture, I'm sure there is enough technical support available here to still make Edugeek useful to your new role!

Well. I'm now midway through my second week and I have to say that there is life after education. But, having said that, my first week was a bit rocky and it was a massive culture shock. One that I was expecting, but still pretty tricky to get my head around.

Things are going well so far, but I've got quite a lot to learn from a technical perspective, so if anyone knows any good free teaching materials for Citrix or Pix firewalls I'll let you claim a free drink from me. You'll have to come to London, mind.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. Just wanted to keep in touch with a really lovely and valuable community.
