John Cena plays an ex-special ops guy who gets lured back in for one "easy" protection job. Bit of an 80s throwback, and not really worth your time. Even Cena seems a little embarrassed to be in such schlock.

Two high school losers form a "fight club" in the hope that it will enable them to get with the girls of their dreams.

 

VERY sweary but fun comedy. Loses steam a bit when the friends inevitably fall out for a while, but recovers for the final act. Not a "must see" but if the trailer appeals, it's worth a look.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Cinema)

 

Reasonably entertaining, but could have done with fewer fight scenes. I did enjoy the world-building in the Hollow Earth. If anyone sees it, look at The Colosseum at the end of the film.

Went to a local independant cinema (Flower Bowl if @Dos_Box is interested) to see some national theatre live with the excptional Michael Sheen in Nye.

Great performances from the whole cast and a really good story of a political force. should be required watching.

Our local cinema does pretty well with these and the Royal Ballet/Opera screenings. When we went to see the new Ghostbusters movie I think there were more people in whatever opera was playing that night.

No such niceties at our cinema (small, but expanding, chain)! They did try a bar, but that's now a rarely-staffed gelato stand. "Nye" has been and gone, so can't be sure how much they charged, but it seems to be £15 for the "event" screenings compared to £6.49 for "normal" movies. "Swan Lake" is on tonight and is pretty full (grey=booked).

 

 

In comparison, "Dune 2" in the big screen (over double the size) only has a dozen seats booked.

Reggie, AKA , finds himself abandoned in the big city by his heartless owner, Doug, he his taken in by Bug and learns the ways of the street. When he finally realises that Doug's games of "Fetch and :censored:" were actually previous attempts to abandon him, he decides he will take his revenge on the thing that is most important to Doug. He and his friends will find Doug and Reggie will bite Doug's off.

If you don't mind crude/scatological humour and non-stop swearing, this is actually pretty funny. Not a must see, but if you have Netflix and a strong stomach and want an amusing 90 minutes it's worth a look. The trailer doesn't have all of the funniest bits, for a change.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (Netflix)

 

My comments on Part One still hold, apart from the bit about Christmas - though I still struggled to stay awake.

 

Zack Snyder's Star Wars meets The Magnificent Seven. Possibly watching this exhausted in the Christmas run-up didn't do it any favours, but I struggled to stay awake and was surprised to see that it was only a bit over two hours long when I made it to the end. It looks great, but feels a bit hollow. I also feel that it is one of those rare movies that should have been a TV show, which would have given us more time with the individual members of the group. Hoping the second part will be worth the wait.

 

The character development for the team this time was limited to a just-before-the-battle "back story around the campfire" type scene. I'm sure that most Zack Snyder films would be closer to 90 minutes if he laid off the slowmo but the film does look good. Not sure it was worth the wait and I'd rather see a sequel to "Army of the Dead" or even his Director's Cut of "Sucker Punch" than the proposed FOUR more entries in this saga (two more duologies). A lot of it just didn't make sense, like why was the piffling amount of grain the community could harvest - surely not enough to feed even the crew of the dreadnought - of such import? Why harvest by hand when they had gravity wagons? Why did Kora revert to her old, godawful haircut?

The Fall Guy (Cinema)

 

 

After a stunt goes wrong, Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) loses his mojo and self-sabotages his relationship with camera operator/budding director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). 18 months later, he is called in to save Jody's first movie by finding its missing star.

 

The dialogue isn't as sparky as the trailer makes it seem (great editing in the trailer plus a few excised lines - though not as many as in the second trailer) but it's a lot of fun with some great stunt work. Hannah Waddingham is almost unrecognisable under a black wig as the producer and yes, Lee Majors does show up. There are also a couple of other cameos and some fun aural Easter eggs. Worth a look and worth staying through the credits to see some behind the scenes footage of the stunts which lead to a fun mid-credits scene. Shame that it's only doing "OK".

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Cinema)

 

Generations after the death of Caesar, clans of apes are the dominant species on an Earth that looks very much like the one of Horizon: Zero Dawn (without the mecha-dinos). Humans have regressed to mute savages who still manage to keep themselves clothed, When a warlike clan destroys his village, Noa sets out to track his clan down in the hope of rescuing them and is joined by wise orangutan Rakka and a human woman they name Nova.

 

Pretty good, but overlong and is definitely the first part of a trilogy while the first three felt more like stand-alone stories following Caesar.

 

Mother of the Bride (Netflix)

 

An over-protective mother (Brook Shields) is shocked to learn that her daughter's fiancé is the son of the guy who broke her heart in college.

 

Below average rom-com. The bride comes across as incredibly shallow and self obsessed but, given that most of the main characters are in their 60s, I don't think her age bracket is being targetted. Nice to see the doctors from "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Lucifer" in other roles. Admittedly, he just seems to be playing a slightly camper version of the same character (and above his age as he's in only 50) while it's a surprise to learn that she's in her mid-fifties.

Not a patch on the original. It had the 80's cheesy story, but without the 80's charm. Connor McGregor basically plays himself and it's hilarious. Honestly, the film would be so much worse without him.

"The Fall Guy" is already out as a premium rental in the US. UK release looks likely to be at the end of June. No wonder people aren't going to the cinema!

IF (Cinema)

 

 

Bea (Cailey Fleming) is only 12 but her mother has died of cancer and now her Dad (John Krasinski) is in hospital awaiting a serious heart operation. She is sent to live with her grandmother (Fiona Shaw) for the summer and one night sees a strange creature named Blossom (voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Following the creature leads her into the world of IFs, forgotten childhood Imaginary Friends who Cal (Ryan Reynolds) and Blossom are trying to match up with new kids.

 

Though this movie is being marketed as a fun family comedy I'd class it more as a kid's film for grown-ups, which is a much tougher sell I guess. It's not kid-unfriendly,but I do think certain adults will get a lot more out of the film. The cast are great, with Reynolds toning it down a bit and Cailey Fisher's performance is incredible. Fiona Shaw is always good, but her scene dancing to Khachaturian's "Spartacus" is superb. The FX are great, too. Mme LeMarchand and I loved it, but we were the only people in the screen. So far the Box Office has been "soft", which is a shame. If you still hope that one day you'll find a wardrobe that leads to Narnia or that an owl will drop you a scroll informing you that you've been inducted into the new mature students program at Hogwarts you'll probably get a lot out of this.

 

P.S. No end credits scene as such, but there is a "In loving memory" sequence of clips featuring Lewis the bear, played by Louis Gossett Jr, who sadly passed in March.

I think it tried to have humour but it misses the mark for me.

Tried this and kept falling asleep. She can be quite good in some things (I was quite impressed by her in "Marry Me" but I guess it wasn't much of a stretch). They gave her some godawful haircuts and costumes in the bits of "Atlas" I woke up for.

Fun comedy thriller that's worth a couple of hours of your time.

Mack and her 2 pals run elaborate "plays" to get each other "companionship". When she takes a shine to a top journalist, the team set up to do their thing... but what if she wants more than just one night?

 

Quite a fun movie, though if you paid attention to the trailer you probably know where it's heading.

I watched Godzilla minus one last week.

 

I've read a few reviews saying you should watch it with subs but I decided to watch the dubbed version.

 

I enjoyed it but not worth the hype IMHO.

 

Oh and I managed o catch Sound of Freedom which was a weird one. Not sure its a film you enjoy!

That's one on my list, though it sounds as if there is a lot of "embellishment" and that the real life guy (and now star Jim Cavaziel) believes in some QAnon theories.
