Bad Boys: Ride or Die (Cinema)

"The Cartel" has infiltrated the Miami PD and framed the late Captain Howard for their crimes. Mike and Marcus are determined to prove his innocence, but end up on the run.

 

I quite liked the last one, but this has the edge. Not the sort of film you'll "love" but worth a look - probably when it hits streaming rather than theatrically. Bit hard to see Vanessa "High School Musical" Hudgens as one of Will Smith's exes, though.

Rocky and Rani are two very different people from two very different families. When they fall in love neither family approves so they decided to "swap" their families so that both "sides" can get to know them and see that they really are each other's "ones".

 

My first Indian romcom! Watched over a couple of nights as it's almost 3 hours long, which is a bit odd as some sources say it's ten minutes shorter but originally 12 minutes longer (there is a subplot that just seems to disappear and we never see Rocky fulfil his "horse" promise). The subs on Amazon are a bit weird, sometimes it looks like they are trying to capture the characters' accents (in the English bits, I don't speak Hindi!) but sometimes it just looks like the work of someone who's not great with English.

 

Anyway, initially a bit of a slog and the eponymous couple go from animosity to lurve way too quickly but Mme LeMarchand and I both warmed to it and ended up enjoying the movie. Probably not the best start to watching Indian movies, but if you've ever wondered if you should give an Indian romcom a go then it's worth a look.

Just a lovely film, have to admit I had a tear in my eye at the end. I went with my 2 pre teen girls so was hard hitting.

In the Blood (Prime Video)

 

Ava's father brought her up to be able to handle herself in pretty much any combat situation. Orphaned as teenager, she has survived and has just got married to the heir to the heir of an affluent holiday. On their honeymoon, her husband is injured in a zip-lining accident, but the ambulance never makes it to the hospital. It's time to break out her particular set of skills.

 

If you're looking for a throwback to those sort of films you'd find on the bottom shelf of the video rack, this may scratch that itch. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

Breach

 

I listed to a Podcast (American Scandal) a while back, it was about someone in the FBI who was leaking secrets to the Russians. He basically ran the FBI secrets database, printed them all off and handed them over. The podcast we really good. I learnt there was a movie based on this called Breach. I watched it at the weekend. I was very disappointed. It only covered the undercover work to expose him and totally missed the best bit of telling the whole story. It was also quite Dull. Would not recomend.

Under Paris (Netflix) AKA Sous La Seine

 

 

Three years ago, marine biologist Sophia lost her husband and most of her team to an attack by a shark that had grown way faster than it should have. Now, just as the Seine is to be used for the Olympic Triatholon, an activist group has traced the shark's location... it's in the Seine.

 

Dumb but fun. Be warned that the film ends an act or two earlier than you'd expect, though the end credits graphics suggest that there is a plan for a sequel that will be a bit more global if it comes to pass.

 

I can't believe no-one thought to use "Sharks in the Seine" as the English title.

I read the book of the other when it came out, so that movie was already spoiled! Especially as the book was way better, IMHO.

Alex Foley heads back to Beverley Hills when his estranged daughter is embroiled in a case involving a drugs cartel.

 

Most of the cast show up along with most of the music (often in cover versions) for this sequel. It's OK, but I wasn't left feeling like I wanted another sequel.

The Family Plan (Apple TV+)

 

 

Dan is a devoted father and loving husband and... just a little bit dull. One day his family find their lives upended when Dan's past returns to put all of them in danger.

 

Entertaining action comedy, but fairly forgettable.

 

Space Cadet (Prime Video)

 

 

Rex always dreamed of being an astronaut, but life happened. When she decides to apply for NASA her friend feels that her CV needs... punching up and makes a few changes that land Rex a place in the program (@witch may have some competition). Will Rex make it into space, or will she be caught out?

 

Fun comedy, but totally predictable.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters (Loan)

 

Despite seemingly wrapping everything up in a 2021 film, Hallmark were obviously hoping there was still a market for more of the POSTables. This sees them trying to deliver 3 letters lost during a (fake) postbox bomb incident but mainly is about the 4 leads (+ a newbie as they're all in their 50s now). While the original episodes generally had some quite moving plots and a mystery about the "lost" letters, the movies are increasingly about the two lead couples and also increasingly cheesy. One for the fans only.

 

Find Me Falling (Netflix)

 

 

This month's Netflix romcom with gorgeous scenery is set in Cyprus, where washed-up rock star John Allman (Harry Connick Jr, who also wrote the character's songs) has come to lick his wounds. However his lost love, the subject of his big hit, still lives on the island...

 

Surprisingly decent, with some nice humour. Worth a look if the trailer sparks your interest.

Less a sequel than a "reimagining", this is a fairly effective disaster/action flick. Lacks the "wow" factor of the original, but worth a look when it hits the streaming service of your choice.

Deadpool vs wolverine (cinema)

 

Went on my own to see this as my wife doesn't get it. Incredibly violent, geeky, funny and glorious. Not the deepest of stories but so much fun... The cameos are great too.. especially ***** who is my all time favourite.

 

Will need to see it a few times to catch all the references.

My Spy: The Eternal City (Prime Video)

 

Sequel to "My Spy". Dave Bautista is back as JJ, and now he's grown some hair, oh - and is now officially Sophie's adoptive father. He's taken a desk job, but his skills are needed when terrorists steal a nuke and intend to blow up the Pope and Sophie's choir.

 

Watched this in two halves as we both fell asleep. I remembered to pre-adjust the picture for the second attempt (Prime stuff often looks weird on our TV at the same settings that seem to work well elsewhere) and the last third seemed an improvement on the first two thirds, but still not one to waste your time on.

The ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (Prime Video)

 

 

WW2: An unconventional team is assembled to take out the supply chain that enables the U boats to operate across the Atlantic so that the Americans aren't too scared to enter the war.

 

Not sure why this came in for such stick, it's a fairly decent "men + woman on a mission" movie with Guy Ritchie reigning in some of his worst excesses. Henry Cavill isn't as OTT as the trailer makes it look. Not destined to be a classic, but worth a watch if you have Prime.

Make Me Believe aka Sen İnandır (Netflix)

 

 

Magazine editor Sahra is in the running for a big promotion... if she can land the interview with a reclusive photographer she has promised. A visit to her matchmaking grandma leads her to the photographer, but things get complicated.

 

Less the romcom the trailer suggests, it's more of a romcom unless I'm missing Turkish humour. All right, but very predictable. Anyone who has watched "The Protector" (Hakan: Muhafız) may recognise star Ayça Ayşin Turan who played Leyla in that show.

Trigger Warning (Netflix)

 

Jessica Alba (who is now 43!!!) stars as Parker, a Special Ops type who returns to her small home town after her father dies, only to find that her father's death may have been a murder and there is corruption in the town.

 

The sort of thing that you would have found on the bottom shelf of the video store back in the day. Not as bad as some of the reviews/internet commenters would make out, but hardly great - I forgot I'd watched it! Still, about the same as the Chuck Norris films it has a call out to.

Deadpool & Wolverine (Cinema)

 

The Merc with the Mouth is back, and he needs Wolverine to help him save the multiverse.

 

Entertaining, but you will need a basic knowledge of the Fox (and other) Marvel movies as well as the MCU and some of the core ideas in Loki to get the most from it. Plus knowledge of one actor's long-cherished dream and another's casting rumours for a couple of the cameos. Far too many fights and the very crude humour gets a bit wearing, but worth a look if you're already interested. A bit hard to discuss without giving too many spoilers but some of the cameos were brilliant.

Ricky Stanicky (Prime)

For years, three best friends have been using a made-up friend, Ricky Stanicky, to get out of things they don't want to do, or go to events that their partners would not be happy about them attending. Eventually they have to present Ricky and hire an actor to play the part, but the actor decides he likes being Ricky more than he likes his own life.

 

While it's hard to sympathise with the trio at first, you eventually get into the movie. Not a classic, but does have some laugh out load moments. If you're looking for a comedy on Prime, you could do worse.
