Eternals. I really liked it and not sure why it was relatively poorly received by critics. It felt like a Marvel movie, but also didn't. It was much more character driven than previous Marvel films imo.

Eternals (Cinema)

 

Not sure why this is getting such a critical bashing (though amazed that the audience score on RT is so high given some of the stuff in the film). Bit too long and murkily shot, but otherwise an interesting move away from the standard Marvel formula. Bonus points for the trailer not spoiling too much of the movie. Worth a look if you watch the Marvel movies or if the trailer caught your eye, though the end credits sequences aren't desperately worth staying for unless you're a big 1D fan or REALLY well versed in Marvel lore.

 

Edit: The first Marvel film that I've liked the score (apart from the Avengers Fanfare).

 

Red Notice (Netflix)

 

Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot star in a buddy heist movie. A bit overlong, but definitely not murkily shot. One of those films that is fun to watch, but that you won't remember much about a few days later. Apart from Gal Gadot's stunning smile.

Do you mean it dodged the rpg? I actually expected Rita Arya to be the "surprise".

 

As for Gal, this is the best clip of this moment I could find (I'm sure there used to be one with better sound where you could see Jason Momoa being impressed enough to nudge Ben Affleck to look) but how could you not "get" someone like this:

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Enjoyed it, despite the "Ahhhh CG everywhere, whats going on? I can't tell whats happening" typical ending. Good performances across the board. Fun cameo in it too.

 

Jungle Cruise - Fun. Better than it had any right to be - Ridiculously Indiana Jonesy - about 20 minutes too long.

Watched "Venom 2" on Friday - Very enjoyable, same humour as the first.

 

Watched "Red Notice" on Saturday - Not a heavy thinking plot line, Ryan Reynolds playing a Ryan Reynolds character and Dwayne Johnson playing a Dwayne Johnson character, but good nonetheless and I feel worth more than the poor reviews it got.

Watched that Saturday night. It was a very entertaining movie, but I did catch that, too.

My main issue wasn't the pristine condition, it was that the shelf-life of petrol is only 6 months, and 12 for diesel. There is no way that car should've run.

I caught Eternals last night. I enjoyed it too! It had a lot to do: there's a cast of ten, across 7000 years, and by the end there were two antagonists and a third off-stage, so at points it somehow managed to feel rushed despite being 2h37 long (bonus points for the moment that Sersi says "I've tried so many times" about something we'd not seen her try once). Generally speaking though it was less hectic than Marvel usually is, and much more beautifully shot. Some of the scenes looked like concept art--that final scene was like something out of a Zelda game.

 

Richard Madden was rubbish as Ikaris though. Didn't buy his romance with Sersi at all, which is frustrating given how central that is to the character of the team. He was completely wooden, and like he'd just decided he was in love with Sersi cos Gemma Chan is hot (I mean... fair) and she was in love with him because he was the Mighty Ikaris and it was expected. The others were good, tho: I liked the dynamic between Gilgamesh and Thena, and Phaestus' family life, and Druig and... the one what ran fast? Too many names.

 

Beyond a couple of mentions of Thanos and the Snappening, it wasn't connected to the rest of the MCU at all, and so it felt almost like an epic fantasy of its own mythology. Might be worth a look if Marvel's not usually your thing but the trailer intrigued you nonetheless.

Re Eternals, I do think they should have had some sort of accent explanation along the lines of, "Have you noticed how those centuries you spent in affected the local speech?" The group all had different accents right from their arrival on Earth. Or does every planet have a Scotland?

Red Notice - very enjoyable. Usually when critics say "Ryan Reynolds is exceptionally irritating in this" it means he's just himself and is a blast. Not as good as Hitmans Bodyguard but enjoyable still.

Shang Chi - Also enjoyable. Some of the CGI seemed a little bit small screen (refer to Blade 2 for a good, bad example of this) which was a bit jarring in places but particularly liked the Katy character. Although looking up the actress online afterwards and stumbling across her first major music video release, I wonder what Disney thought upon viewing it?

Idiocracy - Just had to watch it at last after a couple of failed attempts. So bad it's good, and a little close to the bone!
