Military Wives (Amazon)

 

 

"Inspired by" the founding of the "Military Wives Choir" movement, this is one of those films that is utterly predictable and features pretty much every "surprise" and emotional beat that you'd expect. However it succeeds as a "warm blanket" movie - one of those, "I know it's not great cinema, but I just want something comforting" sort of films. If that's what you're in the mood for, go for it. (Unless you're likely to become a military wife as it does show some of the cons).

So good I only remember the first one!

 

It was OK - a bit of fun to pass the time. Huge plot holes, didnt know what was going on half the time but hey, aliens!

 

I tried to watch it and got about 20 minutes in and realised I just wasn't watching it. May have been in the wrong mood/mindset so may try again. What series is it?

Skyline: Aliens invade, mainly set in an apartment IIRC. Watch the end credits to see the ending they obviously didn't have the budget for in storyboard format.

Beyond Skyline: Martial arts vs aliens in Laos.

Skylines: Humanity takes the fight to the aliens.

Mission Mangal (Recorded from Star Plus HD when Virgin were giving us a load of the Indian channels free for some reason)

 

 

After a bad judgement call on a satellite launch sees the mission end in failure, its team leader, Rakesh Dhawan, takes the blame and is shunted off to the "Mars" project which is widely seen as a dead end. When the team member whose decision caused the accident spots a way to make the project work, the ISRO (Indian NASA) reluctantly assigns a small budget. Refused access to the top scientists, Rakesh recruits a team of scrappy misfits - but can they manage to make the rapidly approaching launch window, let alone design and build a craft that will reach Mars orbit?

 

Based (very loosely, one suspects) on the real launch of India's first Mars satellite this is a surprisingly decent watch. I did think that, for India, it seemed unlikely that the team would comprise so many women but the end credits feature pictures of the real people involved, and there were quite a few ladies there. Obviously not in the 5:3 ratio of the film, or as uniformly glamorous. Other surprises were how much of the dialogue was in English (and not just the science stuff) and the lack of Bollywood song and dance numbers - though one of the husbands proves he's not too old by launching into one in a club and the team to start sort out their base with a bit of choreography. Both sequences don't last long, with the latter morphing into a "getting things running" montage - so if you find those parts off-putting in Indian films, this one is fairly safe.

 

Worth a watch if you fancy a fairly "light" NASA sort of movie.

Skylin3s (Netflix)

 

Third in the trilogy (with hints of further expansions to come). Not exactly a classic but, hey - if you've got Netflix... This time a small group head to the alien homeworld whilst a another tries to keep a new invasion at bay on Earth.

 

In Like Flynn (Netflix)

 

Allegedly based on the true story of Erroll Flynn's pre-Hollywood exploits, and directed by Russell "Highlander" Mulcahy, this is a handsomely-mounted but only vaguely involving tale. Probably only worth a watch if you're a big fan of Erroll Flynn, or would-be Indiana Jones tales (minus the supernatural stuff).

Sat (and stayed awake!) through the full 4 hours of Justice League (2017) last night and left feeling mostly disappointed.

 

Ignoring the terrible CGI throughout and plot holes so large you could drive an entire other film through them, it all appeared a bit meh until the end when it went into full WWE power-up hero mode for the somewhat rushed ending.

 

If you have a lot of time to kill in lockdown, it's ok I guess. Would I watch it again - no...

Love Sarah (Sky Movies)

 

 

After the eponymous Sarah dies, her mother, daughter and best friend/business partner are all heartbroken - but they determine to fulfil her dream of opening a bakery.

 

One of those films that it's best not to look too closely at (how does this make sense financially?) but it's a generally warm-hearted and easy watch if that's what you're in the mood for.

Home Alone, Amazon Prime - really didn't go down well with the kids. Took way too long to get to the slapstick comedy action and when there, it was short lived and not that exciting. Perhaps we've seen too much of them over the years.

Zack Snyder's Justice League (Sky Movies)

 

Not awful but, unless you're a DCEU or Zack Snyder completist, not worth 4 hours of your time. If you're wondering which version to watch and you're not avoiding all things Whedon because of his alleged dictatorial nature, or you really wanted to see more of Cyborg, or hate 16:9 aspect ratio (this is in IMAX ratio which looks like 4:3), go for the Whedon version as you get basically the same story in 1/2 the time.

 

I'd love to really know how much of the Whedon version he filmed (allegedly 75%, but this seems very high considering he was brought in to "finish up" when Snyder left after a personal tragedy) and how much of the new version was already shot as opposed to shot more recently. I personally loved 300 and Sucker Punch, but always felt that Snyder wasn't the right fit for mainstream DC, a feeling that the more vocal sections of the internet seemed to take to the nth degree until his departure, when suddenly he became the only person who had the right vision for it.

DC have done so well on TV with live and animated stuff. They should have just given control of their movies to either Greg Berlanti or Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

For me, the TV stuff is just an extension of Smallville. It's all Dawson's Creek esque teen drama that I have zero interest in watching. Snyder was never the man to do it either, his objectivist streak doesn't fit with DC, as you can see with his handling of Superman.

 

Matt Reeves being handed The Batman after what he managed with the 2nd and 3rd of the Planet of the Apes reboots, Cloverfield and Let Me In (the Let The Right One In remake) is absolutely down my street though!

Not a fan of DC TV either. I can see why folks like it, but it always feels a bit "cheap" to me. The ones I did watch were Constantine and Swamp Thing, both of which didn't last long - though I guess Matt Ryan is still playing Constantine for DC.

Sat and watched Schneider's justice league the other day.

First 2 hours of the film could have been done in half an hour if they got rid of the pointless slow-mo and awful plotting (or lack of).

Second was much improved but I couldn't not just compare it (unfavourably) to both Lord of the Rings and the MCU films and didn't feel it worked at all. Too long farting about with Superman for too little payoff, and no real attachment made to any character. Well, apart from maybe Barry Allen who was easily the best character if you ignore his very rapey copy of Quicksilver's antics. Very human, very vulnerable, probably the only character that properly worked.

Beth is a massive romcom fan who wishes her life would resemble the films she loves, but when the cinema she loves working at is bought by a big chain, her non-committal boyfriend dumps her and her mum announces that they are both moving to Australia on Christmas Eve

 

Not actually a "Christmas Film", this is a low key/low budget (a "busy restaurant" scene features two actors and the waitress's torso) romcom. If it looks like your sort of thing, vaguely worth a look - but it's not going to convert anyone to the way of the romcom.
