LeMarchand Posted June 28, 2020 Author Posted June 28, 2020 Power Rangers (2017) Never seen the show, but this seems to be an effort to make a "more realistic" version without going the full "Fantastic 4". Unfortunately, realistic + Power Rangers doesn't really go and it takes an age before the group suit up. I don't know if C5 had a "family friendly" cut, but there was some jarring editing going on if not. Not recommended, but not awful.
CHiLL Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 The Social Network - 7/10 I missed this when it came out and quite enjoyed it. Based on the creation of Facebook. A good performance and some big names in it! 7500 - 8/10 New film on Amazon staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I heard about it from Empire Magazine's podcast review and my brother-in-law is a pilot with Ryan Air, so I find it all interesting. The film is almost entirely set within the cockpit of a passenger airliner and it shows a hijacking from the pilot's point of view. I really enjoyed it. I actually mentioned it to my brother-in-law before I actually saw the film and he went ahead and watched it. He also really liked it and said that up until the hijacking occurs, it's almost uncanny as to the procedures depicted, even down to the language, attitude and humour used. His main criticism is that once a hijacking occurs, especially over Europe, you will be on the ground anywhere from 10-18 minutes. Obviously the film has some creative license and is portraying a human story.

The songs are really great pastiches of that particular Eurovision pop style and we all laughed a lot. Bit too long, though, and I'm getting a bit tired of films where the glamorous and intelligent female lead is in love with the male lead who is neither of those things and a bit of a d~ to her as well (until the inevitable Grand Gesture reveals it is Twue Love). That said, I did find the Grand Gesture quite affecting! Surprised that there isn't a full length version of Volcano Man on the soundtrack. Or so I'm told, it's not like I've listened to it.

I just got the lead in the new Ang Lee film! JADA: That's nice dear. What's it about? WILL: I play an assassin who is targeted by... my younger self! It's going to be wicki-wicki-wicked! JADA: Sounds lovely, dear. WILL: But you haven't heard the best part! Guess who they want to play the younger me? JADEN: ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod WILL: You guessed it! JADEN: OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD OHMYGOD WILL: Yep! ME! They're gonna use CGI and motion capture. JADEN: Aw HELL no! I wasn't expecting a lot from this, but it turned out to be an enjoyable enough 90s style action romp. The Will Smith CG is great, but obviously took most of the FX budget as a few other shots were a little off. I was relieved that they didn't make Mary Elizabeth Winstead a love interest, but a bit disappointed that there was a gratuitous "strip down" scene for her. I'm almost wondering if this was CG'd in post production as it was so out of keeping with the rest of the film. Even other shots in the scene were angled so that the actress wasn't "on display". Quite amusing that over half the main cast (unless you count Will Smith as two) were Brits pretending to be Yanks. Also, I know it was the film's USP, but I can't help but feel that they could've just used the reference actor for Will Smith with prosthetics to stick his ears out to save on an army of CG peeps. He's not a double for Big Willie, but he's close enough.

It wasn't Oscar worthy (though the final song definitely was) but it was the right balance of silly comedy and affection for it's subject matter. For an American written and produced product, they clearly got Eurovision. I enjoyed it for what it was, which was a love letter to that bizarre show we all have a little affection for. The biggest joke was that it was held in Edinburgh, as if the UK will ever win again. I'm still trying to figure out if the movie was suggesting that Sigrit is in her early 50s though, cause that 10 year old kid dancing to Abba in 1974 would be 56 ish now, and she was about 6 so that left me confused. Sigrit looks FANTASTIC for her age! Was about 30 minutes too long tho.

The opening credits seemed to suggest this, with bits setting up Gary Oldman's Evil Villain and lots of hints that Olga was a crime-fighting mystery woman. What the film turned out to be was "Die Hard in an underground car park". Though when they got to the roof they appeared to be quite high - but all we got to see was a few levels of parking, a basement (?) and one floor of meeting rooms(?). Despite the obviously low budget, the film manages to never look cheap and the fights are pretty brutal with some of the most gruesome sound fx I've heard (guess celery, cabbage and watermelon weren't going to stretch the budget). Not a great film by any means, but might be OK if you fancy giving your brain the night off in front of Netflix, though Narnia fans will be shocked to see that Peter Pevensie has turned into a nasty Yank.

If you like cartoony comic book violence and good voice talent(David McCallum as Alfred in the Batman ones for one, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern in some of the later ones, talent got better as they progressed), well worth it.

LeMarchand Posted July 5, 2020 Author Posted July 5, 2020 Dumplin' Willowdean Opal Dixon, or Dumplin' to her former beauty queen mom, has mainly been brought up by her aunt who taught her to be happy within herself (and to love Dolly Parton). When this plus-sized teen decides to enter the town's beauty pageant as a protest, she not only changes her own life but the lives of those around her. Haven't linked to the trailer, which is spoilerific, but this is a sweet, warm-hearted film that doesn't totally follow the path you would expect. If you've had it on your list for a bit, it's worth checking out.
sonofsanta Posted July 5, 2020 Posted July 5, 2020 I watched Hamilton too, and... look, I am really not a musicals person at all. There isn't a musical out there I actually like, in large part because my simple brain can't manage to appreciate a melody and parse the words at the same time, and also because I just really don't like Andrew Lloyd Webber's music (sorry). But my god, Hamilton is brilliant. It helped enormously that I could put subtitles on to keep up with what was happening, but the lyrics are incredible, the music is catchy and interesting, the performances are amazing and the story scratches so many of my personal itches (friends to rivals! What happens after the revolution! Brought low by your own inability to compromise!). It's well worth a go, even if you don't think it'll be your thing.

In Hollywood - Very good. Very good indeed. I won't spoil it, but by the end the title makes complete sense and is quite the gut punch, especially if you're aware of the history of what happened in August 1969.

Maybe I should give this Hamilton a go, but I did listen to some of the tracks and it's not my sort of music at all. Also not a fan of both colour-blind casting in historical things and especially colour-blind casting that seems to ignore the vast spectrum of ethnicities in favour of black or white. I know LMM is kinda a hodge-podge, but in the trailer he seem to be the only person of any sort of Hispanic heritage and I can't see anyone who looks like they have roots anywhere east of Europe.

I did laugh a few times and there were some good songs. 1

Pippa Soo is gorgeous though, so I'll take whatever I get. Plus, she's got some serious pipes on her and can theatre act her butt off.
