Jawloms Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 John Wick 1 and 2. I'd not really heard a lot about them (don't know how) until very recently when the third was being advertised all over everywhere. Perhaps a little over the top with the amount of guns and the lack of his injuries, but enjoyable!

Highly recommended. Spiderman Far From Home It's just decent, a solid 7/10. Tom Holland is brilliant as always but the plot is a little silly (even by Marvel standards). But it's well done and pretty funny in parts.

Maybe they can do a blokes recut with more sf stuff. Or more scenes about sysadmins trying to recover computers that crashed when they weren't shut down properly.
Garacesh Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 My girlfriend was insistent I watched The Hunger Games, which I'd never bothered to see because of all the hype surrounding it (and having never read the books), but I relented. So thanks to Netflix*, I've now watched The Hunger Games, then Catching Fire, and then Mockingjay Part 1. I've still yet to watch Mockingjay Part 2, but I have to admit I've been enjoying it. It's a tiny bit predictable sometimes, I've managed to call out a few important plot details in advance, but still enjoyable. Except for the annoying Twilight-esque love triangle going on. That can do a running jump. * Bizarrely it's not on UK Netflix. But it is if you go via some of NordVPN's UK servers. Go figure.

Gale would be such a stronger character if he weren't doing the whole 'woe-is-me', "I can only get your attention when I'm in pain" pity-party. Decent super(anti)hero cinematic experience. Venom movie.

Lady Gaga was pretty decent and the songs (until the Evil British Pop Guru) got his hooks into them weren't too bad. I felt they kind-of muffed up the impact of the ending, but otherwise a solid effort.

Not a spot on the original animation and if you had to pay to see one film this month, I don't think I could recommend The Lion King.

Sasha and Marcus are inseparable as children, but when they consummate their relationship as teenagers it doesn't work out. Sasha heads to New York and becomes a celebrity chef while Marcus stays in San Francisco to look after his dad. Years later, Sasha returns to SF to open up a new restaurant - will they have another chance together? The plot is totally predictable, but the film is still a lot of warm-hearted fun. The trailer blows the surprise A-List celebrity appearance (so I haven't linked to it) but said celebrity seems to be having fun with their image. If you like romcoms and have Netflix, this is worth a look.
CHiLL Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 (edited) Crawl (2019) Went to the Secret Screening at Cineworld last night and it was Crawl. One of the worst films I've seen in years. It was almost TV movie like, in the realms of Sharknado. At least Sharknado knew what type of film it was and played to that in a tongue in cheek way. However Crawl was taking itself seriously. The acting wasn't great and the bad science and first aid in the film were second to none. Surprisingly it's mostly rated as 3/5 for reviews and got 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. Tom Holland is by far the best movie Spiderman there's been, awkward and funny and witty in that off-the-cuff, doesn't-yet-realise it way. The teenage romance between Peter and MJ is awkward as teen romances are, not some idealized nonsense, and there's some really touching moments in the film--brought a tear to my eye when Happy sorts the music out (you'll know what I mean if you've seen it). Plus Spiderman has the best villains. Human and relatable. As with witch, Spiderman far from home, however the plot seemed pretty obvious as you went along. Only thing that threw me off was at the 2nd end credits scene, and hurrah for the proper J Jonah-Jameson! The 2nd credits scene completely relies in you having seen Captain Marvel and is, uh, a bit of a spoiler for that film if you haven't. Hilarious if you have, though. 1

Hilarious if you have, though. Took the kids to see it last week and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was some much needed levity after Endgame. Agreed about Tom Holland, he does make a very fine Spiderman and the way that the shadow of Tony Stark is looming over him seems to suggest some much more deeper story lines to come.
