admars Posted February 24, 2018 Posted February 24, 2018 Blade Runner, hadn't seen it since the Final Cut came out on DVD a few years ago, and didn't get round to seeing new one at the cinema so thought I should rewatch before watching the Blade Runner 2049 BD that arrived the other day, to remind myself what it's all about Enjoyed it, hopefuly will watch and enjoy 2049 next weekend.
LeMarchand Posted February 25, 2018 Author Posted February 25, 2018 When We First Met Distraught by the engagement of the perfect-for-him girl he met 3 years ago to another guy, Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect) wishes he could get a chance to get himself out of the Friendzone. Thanks to a magic photo booth he does -finding himself back on the day they met, he resolves to make changes. But when he awakens back on the same day he travelled back, he discovers that he is going to have to go back and get things right. Again. There's quite a neat idea at the core of the film, but it's spoiled by the casting of Devine and the uneven tone. Although seasoned viewers will guess the ending 1/2 way through, in retrospect what appeared to be some sloppy writing was actually cleverer than it seemed at the time. I wouldn't particularly recommend it, but it's not without harm. Still barely 5/10 though.

When he is scheduled for termination she resolves to rescue him. An odd little film that reminded me a lot (especially in terms of look and sound) of Jeunet/Caro films like Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children. I liked it a lot, but can imagine lots of people will find it a bit slow. Not entirely sure it's worth all the award noms, but worth a look if you're already interested - you'll never see Paddington's Mum in the same light again, though.
LeMarchand Posted March 1, 2018 Author Posted March 1, 2018 Their Finest Gemma Arterton plays a woman who inadvertently ends up writing a propaganda film during WWII. Quite a sweet film, but a third act swerve seemed unnecessary. Gemma's Welsh accent kept fading out, though.

phreak Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 Watched 1 movie in its entirety and 2 half watched movies this weekend. First one was Looney Tunes : Back in action. Wow, just wow. So bad it was funny... in parts. Other parts were just bad. Hard to think that this movie is now 15 years old (2003) back when Brendan Fraser was the hot ticket. Still, the kids seemed to enjoy it. I only watched parts of it. Kingsman: The Golden circle. This was the one I watched fully. And while one in our group (a teacher) made the comment about how certain scenes would be impossible because of physics we all seemed to enjoy it for the most part. Perhaps not as good as the first one though. Lastly, and this was a bit of a time warp, Oliver! A classic movie about that lovably street urchin Oliver Twist. The movie stands up to this day... however I forgot how long some of those music scenes lasted.

Not normally a fan of the "pop" sort of songs that feature, but they work brilliantly in context (and suit star Hugh Jackman's range much better that the songs in Les Mis). It's not perfect: I've deliberately not checked, but suspect that the real P.T. Barnum was far more rogue than loveable and it's hard to believe that this woman would be amazed that a man would look at her, but it's a lot of feel-good fun. My first "gonna get the disk" for ages.

Barnum treated his acts incredibly poorly. and it's hard to believe that this woman would be amazed that a man would look at her I got the impression that it was more to do with the fact that he was white and she wasn't. I figured it was a racism thing.

I might have to YouTube the song (Rewrite the Stars), but I didn't understand why - after they both declared they loved each other - she then knocked him back. Still, all it took was for him to run into a burning building and nearly die from smoke inhalation to change her mind .

A relationship between her and some other joe-bloggs-black-guy would've been fine (she still would've been lower-class just for being dark-skinned though), but the heart wants what the heart wants. but I didn't understand why - after they both declared they loved each other - she then knocked him back. Well he did hold her hand, then let go when other people (judgemental white folk) saw. Maybe she just didn't feel he would've stuck by it, or maybe it was the loving-sacrifice type of thing ("If you love it, let it go" type thing, like "I love him, but if he's with me he'll be reduced to scum and I couldn't forgive myself for doing that to him.") I thought that she initially was surprised that any guy would look at her (because she was a trapeze artist?), not just a rich white dude, hence my confusion.

Genuinely surprised at this. WW is the only post-Nolan DC movie so far that I'd watch again. In my case this may have a lot to do with GGG (Gorgeous Gal Gadot), but Mme LeMarchand is of the same opinion (and doesn't fancy Chris Pine).

Emily (Amy Schumer) drags Mum Goldie Hawn along on a holiday to Ecuador after being dumped by her boyfriend. The two find themselves kidnapped and must escape and somehow make their way back to safety. Not the sort of film you'll find yourself telling people to see, but an amusing enough 90 minutes. It did seem that they'd cut the film to the bone or run out of money to film expository scenes as a couple of things don't get explained or followed up on. On the other hand, it's quite nice to see a film that isn't dragged out to 2+ hours.
admars Posted March 11, 2018 Posted March 11, 2018 we watched Blade Runner a few weeks ago, hadn'tseen it since I bought the definitive version or whatever it's called where hmv gave you free keyring of the car Anyway, we really enjoyed it again. However, last night we watched Blade Runner 2049, it looked very nice, and the score was excellent, but I'm one of the people who ended up being disappointed, too long, and got a bit bored, which was a shame, as I wanted to enjoy it
