Went to see this in the week: Kind of this decade's equivalent to Krull, but with better FX and Jeff Bridges doing another silly voice. It was odd to hear Brit actors putting on American accents in a fantasy setting, and I was unclear as to why the witches had to be destroyed/burnt. Maybe I was swayed by the fact that the lady witches were all kinda hot! Not one to rush out to see, but maybe on a Sunday afternoon with a post-roast lunch filter on... Probably nearly as much as Christopher Tolkien squeezed out of his father's notes. Some of the books seem to be "I found an old shopping list which I can easily expand into a novel".
LeMarchand Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Pretty much a Children's Film Foundation film but with a bigger budget. Stage school kids with posh accents solve dastardly plan. The "The Adventurer" title doesn't make sense, but then neither does most of the film. Incredibly, there is talk of a sequel. It's based on a book trilogy though, judging from the entries on Amazon, somewhat loosely. You could spend 100 minutes doing something far more fulfilling, like the housework...

"Derivative" and "clichéd" don't quite cover it: * You, our teen protagonist, are special because of your bloodline! * There's a secret about who your father is - and you'll never guess! * Everyone is after you - watch out for demons, they could be anywhere! * The funny and gentle friend you've grown up with is in love with you, but you love the moody and mysterious new man in your life - oh noes love triangle! Absolutely YA by the numbers, didn't bother finishing it. Also recently watched Unthinkable with Samuel L Jackson as an army interrogator who has to get the location of three nukes in US cities from Michael Sheen's terrorist. Never really answers the questions it poses around how far can you go, is torture ever justified or reliable, is keeping the moral high ground important... but it's entertaining, chiefly because of the performances in it.

I was so excited as this is, usually, exactly my kind of thing. Sadly I just failed to connect with the film at all. Failed to engage with the characters or the (thin) storyline. Felt it was style over substance... or maybe that was the point...may have to rewatch.

LeMarchand Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 (Fast &) Furious 7 If, like Mme LeMarchand and I, you've avoided this franchise because you don't see the appeal of a bunch of guys driving very fast then you may be missing out on a bunch of dumb but fun films. We only started watching at #5, but have since watched the whole lot and while the last 3 or 4 are more fun, we've enjoyed them all. Of course, it's hard to take the series seriously when you realise that the reality is more like: Anyway, this film finds the team on the run from Jason Statham who is determined to revenge his brother's injuries (from #6). Cue increasingly OTT stunt sequences and lots of guff about "family". Basically, if you thought the trailer looks fun, you'll have a blast. The film has gained some notoriety for the death of Paul Walker whilst filming was on a break. Of course a lot of internet know-it-alls will tell you that the scenes completed with CG/doubles etc are glaringly obvious, but I can't say I noticed (but then I wasn't trying to prove how clever I was by deliberately looking for them). There were some parts near the end I had suspicions about, but that was down to context. I was expecting Walker's character to meet a heroic death, but what happens is a lovely tribute to the actor/character.

It made me laugh a fair bit, which makes it a "win" for a comedy. Not sure why it became one of the "!let's all hate this movie" films of the year.

ICTDirect_Dave Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Saw Age of Ultron on Tuesday night. Really really good film. Plenty of character moments, not just EPIC fights. Full of Joss Whedon's typical humour and eye for detail I enjoyed Agents of Shield's little tie-in this week also.
