Article: EduGeek Back to Work Competition 2014 - Week 1

Behold, the CLAW. (Caps for shouty-ness, not acronym-ness, although suggestions of backronyms will be considered.)

 

 

Fashioned from a fork, a bunch of cable ties, and the mounting strip from an old Smartboard, this feat of IT office junk engineering has proved to be a versatile tool for many common IT related tasks, such as - retrieving keys from the backs of radiators, ceiling tile prodding, and back scratching.

 

It also doubles as a fine deterrent of our less desirable support desk customers -

This is my favourite and most used tool: It can fix many issues, although not many of them technical or computer related.

 

It's a difficult concept to handle, but basically what you do is put it in a cup, and pour boiling water over the top, leave it to sit for a couple of minutes before adding a small amount of milk and drinking. I call it a teabag - Trust me, it works.

just our 16ounc bacho hammer. I would take a picture but it has gone missing! depending on how intensive the job is i sometimes might require the bigger sledge hammer from the caretakers. (They wont let me keep it)

Do we have to photograph it? As some of my stuff is locked away (Axe, Sledge Hammer, lighter fluid). If yes then I wont be able to photograph all of it.

On a more serious note than my last post, the most useful tool I have is this and can be used for most jobs:

 

EDIT: Should be a picture of my Swiss Army Knife here but its not showing for some reason??

 

If anything needs cutting, sawing, filing, opening, tweezering or carrying then this is just the job. Also its great for those quiet periods when I can open a beer/wine and kick back and file my nails.

Our more unusual tools include:

1. A Dremel
   
2. A three computer music system to drown out the pupils
   
   • MPD running on my desktop
     
   • A custom front end on my Joggler (below the centre screen), for easy control
     
   • A RaspberryPi with a reed switch above the door to pause the music whenever anyone enters the office - Can't have the head walking in while we have pirate metal (among other things) playing, now can we
     

[*]An X-Keys for my most used commands (and the school's stupidly long domain name)

[*]A stress relieving pig

[*]A custom made, raspberryPi powered, STONITH device for our Xen cluster - as we're too cheap to buy a switched PDU

[*]An XBOX for those quiet moments we never seem to get

One of these days I'll get around to adding a mini fridge too.

 

The XBOX screen doubles as our monitoring system display when not in use for its primary purpose.

Right, time has run too short to do anything clever/funny/take any photos - the joys of implementing a new finance system that was misconfigured by the consultant - so I'm going to have to go with the "plain and serious text that won't win a damn thing but should be said anyway".

 

Most useful thing in my office: my technicians. I think I might be the one in this office who pulls his weight the least and declares "stuff it, that'll do" the most. Without the thorough, conscientous and reliable work of t'others in here, I really wouldn't stand a chance. I've been almost entirely absent this last fortnight as I sort out the mess with the finance system, abandoning all my other duties and my office on a regular basis to prioritise that, and I don't think anyone else in school has even noticed. It's all just carried along as normal, to the remarkable high standard that I get to take credit for. It's a wonder.

 

And not a one of them spends any time idling on here like I do, so I'm just saying it for the sake of saying it, knowing they'll never read it. Here's to teamwork
