(and my ears with staff moaning they cant get on to google)

pirran Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 We've been having the same problems here over the last few days (just as the staff and students arrive back). At first I thought it was just when using the oh-so-slow transparent proxy service, but not I'm not so sure. Haven't had time to investigate yet due to rolling out a full new domain after years of the school suffering on RM CC4 Server 2003 (not in my hands I might add), we're now on 2012, Vmware+veam on Dell VRTX with SCCM.
speckytecky Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 It's situations like this that drive existing SWGfL customers away and into the hands of other ISPs. Having been with SWGfL now for 10 years plus now and one the whole having received a pretty good standard of service I'm reluctant to jump ship but finding situations like this weaken the case. Especially when I wasn't aware it was a grid issue till after umpteen calls from staff telling me 'the network' isn't working. The fact it was intermittent across the domain didn't help. Rarely it wasn't Edugeek that made me aware of the issue but the fact that in desperation I logged a support call. If only SWGfL support had sent out a notification it would have saved a heap of work and embarrassment. Schools Broadband is looking increasingly attractive!

bobt Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I've just come off the phone with them. Apparently Google has blocked/blacklisted some proxy ip addresses in SWGfL/RM's server farm meaning if you get load balanced onto one of those proxys, no Google for you! 1

Nice of them to actually say this. Though if it's some, rather than all, of their servers why not reconfugure the load balancing? Possibly they are just using something like round robin DNS...

Access one of these IPs directly and it's fine. Don't bother trying to config your DNS to point to one of these addresses, already tried, it doesn't work! localzuk Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Proxy.swgfl.org.uk is intermittent here - as that points to the usual farm of proxies. So we sometimes hit a good cache, and sometimes a bad one.
