I've never found the SWGfL monitoring to be much good. Especially given that they'll insist on telephoning schools and asking secretaries to mess around with routers even when looking at diagnistics would indicate that the problem is elsewhere. Filtering is in practice far more of a political than a technical exercise too.

Nice of them to actually say this. Though if it's some, rather than all, of their servers why not reconfugure the load balancing? Possibly they are just using something like round robin DNS...

Teachers having to specifically go up to a device and release their printing appears to cut down on quite a bit of wastage. Judging by the number of print jobs which wind up timed out and auto deleted. Otherwise such a print job may as well have been output into the "green bin"

The most obvious issue with the "easy"mail system is the lack of encryption on the webmail, IMAP and SMTP auth they are using. Ideally they should be using non CA signed certs for IMAPS(993) and SUBMISSION(587) since CA signed certs are considerably more vulnerable to undetectable MitM. (Very few apps will flag a change of cert if both are signed by a CA, even a different CA. Just about all of them will if a non CA signec ert changes for ANY reason.)

None of these programs are "intelligent" in any meaningful sense. No matter what the advertising might claim. This would be pointless. On seeing a "starred out" word most people will assume the most offensive thing possible by the context.

It may even be down to the simple fact of allowing user comments.

As I'm seeing issues with intrasite connectivity I doubt it's anything to do with "DNS" (or any SWGfL "servers"). If it were my decision I'd have dumped them years ago... Since they just don't appear to understand the basics.

Not sure if this is the right forum, if not can a moderator please move it. The first requirement is the supplier needs to be able to accept an order from school and send invoices. Thus Ebay, Amazon, etc are out of the picture. Hardware wise what's needed are two phones able to handle two concurrent calls; three very basic phones and one DECT or WiFi phone. Servicewise what I'm looking for two concurrent calls on ported number. Not really interested in any kind of "hosted system". Connection would need to be over IAX2 unless the provider could provide the correct details for SWGfL to make firewall changes for their version of SIP/RTP. (And the SWGfL would consent to make such changes.) Useful extras would be a) more concurrent incomming, but not outgoing, calls. (Which would be for purposes of pupil absence reporting and providing recorded information.) b) ability to connect a fax machine. ("Alternatives" involving scanning and email attachments did not go down well with the office staff concerned.)

A very short interruption can cause things to reboot, even hang. Also switches can take longer to reboot than PCs. Teacher's tend to moan more in situations where the network fails due to a power failure they didn't see or "It's still not working even though the power's back on!"

Plenty of clients do in effect have a built in UPS. e.g. laptops and tablets. The other obvious reason would be if it is a PoE switch.
