Surely FTP is a much more sensible starting point? Helps students to understand what's happening on the server, that everything's a file, that kind of thing. And, forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't everyone need CLI access to a server to start pushing/pulling repos?

It comes with phpmyadmin, works with Dreamweaver or FileZilla (it's FTP!) and behaves kind of like a proper web hosting/reseller account.

Yeah everything is going to use the MAC address somewhere along the line. We dump a CSV (TSV?) of machines and MAC addresses from DHCP, stick that into a batch file, wakes up all the machines every morning.

Hello all. We have three Server 2012 R2 servers (A, B and C), A and B are also DCs, C is just a member. They all serve as file servers as well, holding home drives and shared areas. Server A is fine, and shows Previous Versions / Shadow Copies back into September. However Servers B and C only show today's PV/SC restore points. I can't see any errors pertaining to this in the logs, and there is (currently) less than 10% being used for PV/SC, but it just seems odd that everything has disappeared from before today. Something to do with the rollover into a new month maybe? If so, it didn't do it last month... Any suggestions welcomed, thanks guys!

Veeam is superb. Also, a mention for https://www.nakivo.com/ - we use this and it's similarly excellent. Very similar feature set to Veeam, for less money. We use is with VMware, but they also support Hyper-V.

I'm afraid I can't help specifically with the CSV file, except to say make sure there are no spurious characters or spaces in the file before the commas...But you might want to consider syncing on-premises AD with Azure AD...might take care of some of the headaches for you. what a load of nonsense. thanks folks. fortunately a colleague has written a 'start menu shortcut spinner' which will add stuff to the start menu for us, but it really shouldn't be this tricky to set things up. GPO and registry has worked pretty well until now, right? why break it?

@newpersn did you get anywhere with this? we're on 1607 education and can't get file explorer to show up in the start menu unless you do it manually...and as mentioned above immersive control panel is disabled for obvious reasons.

Are you saying you only run one VM per physical box, or won't run a Linux VM alongside a Windows VM homed on the same physical host? In either case, why? P2V'd our 2008 SIMS server a couple of years ago, no problems. Snapshots are so useful, will definitely be used when it comes to upgrading. We have even used them for SIMS upgrades - I know a backup is taken anyway but...belt and braces. It takes no time so it just becomes a natural step.

Whilst I appreciate this isn't a solution to the issue of your script not running properly, you might consider taking a look at delprof2 - a replacement for the old Windows delprof tool. If you just delete folders from C:\Users it will get out of sync with the registry and the user profile service list and cause the problem you're trying to resolve. Delprof2 has some powerful options and switches, well worth a look.

Really torn on this issue myself - do I run a server at home on a separate box, spend like £5/month on a VPS somewhere and do it myself, or pay a company peanuts per month or year to manage web, email, security and everything else associated with hosting *properly* for me on a shared hosting platform. By all means run a small server at home to experiment with, but unless you really have the time and expertise, pay someone else for some shared hosting. If you're doing it yourself at home I'd always recommend running Linux, Ubuntu or CentOS (that free panel that @GTX mentioned looks cool!) and ideally virtualised, allows for greater flexibility. If you did want to go down the VPS route, OVH are doing VPSs for £3/month -- VPS Hosting: Your virtual server in the Cloud- OVH -- other even cheaper options available at Low End Box - Cheap VPS Hosting Providers Listing & Reviews Too many shared hosting options to mention, they're all absolutely fine these days. I can recommend you one that I've used before, £10 per year for 1GB storage, 50GB transfer, 100 mailboxes, 5 MySQL databases etc etc -- won't post here but PM me if you'd like to know more.

Sigh... With the greatest of respect we are all well aware of this on this forum. That's why this thread exists. With help from a colleague I think we have found the issue - a URL that is used to retrieve the JavaScript to run the image preview thing within Google Image search is filtered when accessed over HTTPS, meaning the script cannot be loaded, meaning users get nothing when they try to click on an image for its preview. Perhaps you could get someone to update my support call no 4974600 which has been open since the 25th June?

Good point. Might explain why no matter what syntax we use it still won't unfilter. If we access that URL on our unfiltered connection (through SWGfL) through HTTP or HTTPS it's fine, so it's gotta be related to that address. Come on RM!
