I need your opinion fast please!!!!

This week I intend to buy a new laptop. I have decided on an Acer. Which is the best OS to install windows 7 or 8.1. Does 8.1 still misbehave? I have been told that it was created for tablets not laptops. I need your opinion please!

8.1 will go on any device it was intended for. Not sure what you class as "Misbehave" , there will be some problems with a new operating system but you'll also see problems with older ones like 7 so I wouldn't choose based on such a generic statement!. Just pick whichever one you prefer and find easier to use, It should be compatible with just about any laptop but worth checking the compatibility status before you buy.

8.1 is faster and more power efficient so I would go with that, I have been using 8.1 since it came.

8.1. It has your familiar Windows 7 shell accessed via the start menu and it's quicker, and more energy efficient which makes sense for a laptop. Also most tier 1s don't like providing driver sets for Windows 7 on their new shiny's.

I'm thoroughly enjoying running 8.1 at home. No reason at all why you shouldn't go for it

+1 for 8.1, it's the superior operating system for multiple reasons. If you really don't like the UI you can use classic shell or start8.

The issue is the software because that's the question the OP asked. From what I've seen, Acer is producing some nice laptops at affordable prices.

and if you want to make it truely Win 7-esq with a start menu install classic shell - Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements which fixes all the irritation of not having a start menu and apps hiding away etc...

Yes, it may take a little getting used to, but it's worth it.

Yes I would its the only way I will run it I don't have a pair of 24" touch screens on my desk and my laptop doesn't have a touch screen either, the interface is perfect for touch screens ala Windows Phone, Windows Surface and then I setup a colleagues new Dell Laptop with a touch screen and it was great on that but until everything is touch we need a no-touch way

 

The start menu exists for a reason as the pants search is still pants (just less big dirty manky ones!) and the "start menu" aka click the button to bring the start screen back up still is naff. I'm more productive with a start menu and will be glad when it returns in full in the next iteration of Windows.

 

8.1 as a base OS, start menu issue aside, its fine and seems good my Laptop runs nicely on it and haven't had too many issues so very happy with that and it does perform better than 7 did on it so just give us the start menu back and the world will be happy, even Apple didn't decide to do such crazy things
