BassTech Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 It's ridiculous, they place sweets/chocolate/toys elsewhere in the shop anyway exactly at a child's height so they spot it straight away.
witch Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 TBF if you have ever shopped when hungry or with a small child, avoiding the sweets at the checkout is nigh on impossible. If they aren't there, you are not going to be tempted. It isn't much, I know, but it is something!

I get what they are saying but it's an interesting phrase when coming from the shops. They know exactly what they are trying to do.

In fact Lidl/Aldi don't sell as many bargain basement ready meals for ludicrous money like the big boys do, for example a Lasagne for 80p.

Supermarkets know exactly what they are doing with product placement - have a read: The science that makes us spend more in supermarkets, and feel good while we do it - so sweets by the checkout are there for a reason Moving them is a really good move.

A friend of mine is a regional manager for Aldi and recently told me that Aldi actually buys in the same grade fruit and veg as Marks and Spencers and Waitrose. Whereas your Tescos, Sainsburys etc. buy in a grade lower.

My point was the over dramatisation of how this will cure obesity... just moving it will make such a small difference. How about better education on healthy eating. And eating chocolate is just a small part of the problem... as is obesity. How about chronic alcoholism, smoking, fast foods...

Lidl bans sweets at thecheckout | Business | The Guardian I heard people say that Lidl/Aldi fruit and veg never lasts as long as other store's. I wonder why? Could it be that it is natural unadulterated fruit and veg? The food in these stores is either the same or as good as in other stores. Obvious things such as milk, eggs, marmite is the same. Some of the meats are excellent. i had some fantastic fresh Angus beef burgers and also fish cakes recently, large chunks of salmon in the fishcakes not mush. The fact is is cheap makes the food snobs avoid and knock them, and long may that last, the queues are long enough for me (not too long). Having lived in Germany many years ago I recognise the model and many of the goods. I'm always surprised how much I can walk out with for less than a Tenner, I'm shocked that I could hold in one hand what I buy for a Tenner in Waitrose (I still shop there for some things). There is plenty of good healthy food in Lidl/Aldi.

Tesla Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 When i was younger my parents used to shop at lidl's, and you're right, the food isn't that bad, but god don't the other kids notice if you have an Orange juice carton by Solevita rather than a carton of ribena, and any other 'imitation' brands that are really not much different, it was a ridiculing point at our school. most of their food is good, but some of it is god damn awful, i have memories of some sweet and sour chicken we bought from there, and it was just horrendous, so it can be a bit of a gamble, but as mentioned, milk bread etc are generally all the same.

Regarding the fruit and veg quality: I do find that a small amount Aldi produce doesn't keep as well as stuff from other supermarkets but the vast majority of their food is fine and generally its all eaten by the next shopping trip anyway Aldi oranges seem to be particularly prone to spoiling quickly.

It's like buying American chocolate - not quiet what I was brought up with from Cadburys. I shop in Sainsburys, purely because the only other people in the store are clutching their pension books. I can usually get in and out without experience trolley rage. Can't say the same for Tesco/Asda.

Asda does, as does Lidl (not sweets but nuts and snacks), Waitrose and Aldi. So in fact Tesco is already doing more than most to help out Edited May 22, 2014 by witch
sparkeh Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Just struck me that in supermarkets the sweets are at the level of a child sitting in a trolley, in the smaller stores they are at a lower level, right about where a child sits in a pushchair. The swines!
