fiza Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Head had a Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 which is now not working for him. I need to find a replacement which is more robust. He uses it as his PC replacement at work and also takes it home every night. Its got to be fairly fast. SSD would be preferred with 8GB RAM. He doesn't want a complete monolith as he has to carry it around. Any recommendations? @VeryPC ? @Millgate ?
Millgate Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Hi buddy, What you need is an Ultrabook! What kind of budget are you thinking of? Other than the Very laptops, I'd recommend the Lenovos (depending on how much cash you have) Luke
pantscat Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Macbook Air! /runs Totally this. My Macbook Air dualboots OSX and Windows 7 and hasn't caused me any hassles in the last 3 years.
fiza Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Luke - he had an ultrabook but it was bashed around so much it stopped working. Under £600 ideally but I will pass on details of anything I think is worth the money.
Oaktech Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 If he's beaten his lappy to death, Panasonic tough-book i'm afraid.
Millgate Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 If he's beaten his lappy to death, Panasonic tough-book i'm afraid. The Toughbook is always a good choice. I think you'll struggle to get that spec under £600 but I'll do a bit of digging
mac_shinobi Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Totally this. My Macbook Air dualboots OSX and Windows 7 and hasn't caused me any hassles in the last 3 years. A 15" Mac Book Pro ( or 13" if the 15" is too much ) ??
fairm010 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I'd recommend what @ICTDirect_Dave has just sorted me out with. Lenovo W510 Core i7 8GB RAM 120GB SSD Beastly things!

Lenovo W510 Core i7 8GB RAM 120GB SSD Beastly things! @ICTDirect_Dave Presume he doesn't have a W530 ? Also how much is one of those W510 laptops with that spec and what SSD is it ? Also would it cost much more for a 240gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD instead of the 120gb ssd ? Edited March 21, 2014 by mac_shinobi

You'd have to get your own SSD as i only get decent pricing when i buy in bulk. @fairm010 paid for the following spec. (PM me for price). Though I've only got a couple left. Quad core i7 720QM 1.6GHZ (Turbo Boost to 2.8) 8GB 10600S RAM (4 x 2gb in this case) New 120GB SSD 1GB Dedicated nVidia Quadro 880M 15.6" 1920x1080 resoltion screen. Win 7 Pro They're Bloomin' lovely things! I want one for myself! Edited March 21, 2014 by ICTDirect_Dave
fairm010 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Yep got them no problem. Props to your delivery company too.. You can watch the van get to you slowly on Google maps! Got one for myself and SBM and we are both in love with these machines, I needed to prove what a good jump an SSD is and she's converted! Cheers Dave! 1
FN-GM Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Have you considered the Dell Latitude series? You can get him a docking station so he can use a monitor / dual monitors with a normal keyboard and mouse at his desk. It will also help with the health and safety regarding using laptops for long periods.

jmak Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Sorry. It's a Dell latitude E6430 ATG from their outlet store - Dell's version of the tough book. Spec varies but they usually have them at about the price you're looking for. Search for Dell business outlet - if that looks a bit heavy, they'll have plenty of other options at decent prices. 1
hawc Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 You could get him one of these: Vtech My Laptop | Kiddicare I would love to see the look on his face. 1
localzuk Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Well, depending on budget: Refurb - Lenovo T410 or T420 from ICT-Direct. New - HP ProBook 6570b Both are pretty tough. However, if you really need something really tough, the Panasonic Toughbook is your only real option - but it is very expensive.
robjduk Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 We bought a Fujitsu lifebook (forget the model but its thin and light with a nice i5). Great little thing and looks good for a head but yeah.... MacBook air or Surface Pro for a headmaster to be honest. - - - Updated - - - We bought a Fujitsu lifebook (forget the model but its thin and light with a nice i5).
