Preferably non violent (although we did play Unreal Tournament at my last place of employment). I look forward to your suggestions. Thanks

I've been blocking all I can, but discovered http://minecraftedu.com/ so I'm considering getting a staff/sixth former to set up and allow controlled access. One year 8 student is aghast that I've blocked his server that he's setup on a paid host out of his own pocket for a school club he reckons he's setting up. Peter

Ah, I see the "rules don't apply if you throw money at them" attitude is starting young there! Another vote here for Minecraft. I'd also throw out Worms Armageddon as an option (newer Worms games won't allow LAN play). OK, it's violent, but in a cartoony way; the game is only rated PEGI 7

3s-gtech Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Trackmania rocks, but it doesn't play well with certain profile setups - you may need a generic time-locked games account for the students to run it. Once you start on playing custom tracks, it just gets better - clients will download the tracks they don't have from any other host so it's easy to share.

I'm also looking at a game called 'world of padman' which is similar to Quake but more cartoon like (age appropriate). At the moment though I can't get it to install as it saya the download is corrupt :-(

darrenstraight Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 I run a Minecraft lunch club here at our school for two days a week, the pupils who go to it seem to really enjoy it. We use the MinecraftEdu software which can be purchased with a school purchase order and allows you to run Minecraft without having to worry about troubles that could have occurred from trying to unblock the normal Minecraft launcher and it's websites, such as pupils using their own offensive minecraft account names/skins and being able to connect to external online servers which we would have no control over. Works well.

chazzy2501 Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Tribes! No gore! You'll want one with the vista patch called Trorbs. You can have 64 players on LAN. I also tried a free Minecraft clone called Minetest. It uses a voxel so CPU bound and looks great. Local server and no internet needed. Trackmania Nations is great and free BUT TM2 says it's free but after a lengthy install and creating a login the software insists that you purchase the tracks. (no free tracks)

synaesthesia Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Quake Live, but accounts required. Quake 3 with blood off, but you can't lock that down so the kids can't turn it on. (it's a game after all) Trackmania 2 etc absolutely is free to play - again, accounts required though. It's a good thought that one, because getting them making tracks and testing them can be as fun as actually playing. Online though, so what language they're open to... Unblock Cbeebies and let them at the Dick and Dom games.
