Upgrading OS X Server 10.6 - Magic Triangle

We have have an OS X 10.6.8 server in a magic triangle setup with Active directory.

 

I'm planning on upgrading to Lion and the Lion server app. I wanted to know if there would be any negative implications on the magic triangle setup with upgrading the server? Apple have good instructions on the server upgrade process but there's no mention of an OD/AD environment.

I have been advised an upgrade will break magic triangle and to use either golden triangle or Centrify third party addon for Active Directory. Active Directory-Based Security and Management for Macs and Mobile Devices

Is there any true need for upgrading to Lion? In my opinion, it's really not the best Server version Apple has come out with, I prefer SL. But that's just my opinion

Skip Lion, go to ML or Mavericks (though that can have issues with Workgroup Manager when upgrading I hear). No point in going to Lion, it's the Vista of OS X releases.

 

I had to rebuild the Open Directory after upgrading our server from 10.6 to 10.8, but there may have been some other issues. This was easy and took very little time in our setup as not that much is controlled by OD - it's most likely you won't need to do this though.

I just got finished upgrading from 10.5 > 10.6.8 > 10.9:

 

The software upgrade process was flawless

Once in 10.9, I had to download the Server app ($19.99 from the App store) and Workgroup manager (free on apple.com). Until you do so 10.9 will "disable" your server. This was painless

My OD was a little odd in that DIRADMIN would not authenticate - I had to archive/restore and it was fine.

My AD triangle had no issues

The server, a 2008 Mac Pro was very pokey with 2gig RAM - upgraded it to 10gig and runs great.

 

I'm holding on to Workgroup Manager for mcx management simply because my trials with Profile Management have been for crap

Same here with Profile Management, Workgroup Manager still seems to work fine for us. From posts on here, if you upgrade the clients to 10.9 WGM can have issues client-side, but not if they're fresh installs.

It turns out we don't need to upgrade to 10.7 on the server, and that a client running 10.7 will suffice. You're all quite right though, 10.7 is rubbish.

I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion last summer and although it looked like it went well, totally crippled the profile manager so had to rebuild the whole thing. I would say its easier to perform a fresh install rather than an upgrade.
