Oops, I didn't see that thread!

Got a OPO invite going spare, if anyone would like it!

I believe it's a group policy processing issue. I had the same problem this week and narrowed it down to folder redirection. I would suggest running a gpresult from within the gp management console for a user and PC you know are experiencing issues, in order to pinpoint the issue. If you haven't done that already, that is!

If you look at the application log in event viewer on a client, do you have event ID's 6005 and 6006?

As I'm sure you guys can appreciate, finance is extremely limited and I've been tasked with finding a free solution (although it looks like a hopeless attempt). I don't suppose anyone can point me in the direction of such a thing?

Hi, We're looking for a SIMS add on that will enable our admin staff to email parent groups. Something that will gather all parent email addresses for year 7, for example, and enable us to email them. Is there anything like this available? If so, is it free or pay for? Thanks J.

Does anyone know of an alternative to Edusweep? We're noticing a huge amount of executables in zipped files, throughout student folders.

Found the solution to my problem! The error was due to permissions. The OU the users were in required read permissions on the Authenticated Users security group!

Recently encountered this error, following some FRS issues with SYSVOL and our NETLOGON folders (event id 13508, if anyone's interested). These replication issues have been resolved, but there is an issue with clients applying group policies. The computer side of the policy applies every time, no problem. The issue is to do with user policies. If a student logs on to a machine they were using prior to our replication issues, they receive all the relevant policies and the machine is locked down, as expected. If they log on to a machine they've never logged on to before, they don't receive any user group policy settings and the event viewer lists error 1053 (with the machine being wide open to their assault). Event 1053: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the user name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). Running a gpupdate /force doesn't apply these policies, only presenting this error... The processing of group policy. Windows could not resolve the user name. This could be caused by one of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller - We're quite confident this isn't the problem. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (An account created on another domain controller has no replicated to the current domain controller) - Checked this, all accounts have been replicated. Any suggestions? I've scoured the internet, but no luck. Thanks J.

I've encountered this error before. My solution is described here > http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/131040-user-profile-service-failed-logon-fix.html and if you're having issues with that, there are suggestions below. I first encountered this in January, following an update.

[sims] An agent is already installed on this machine - how to remove ?
JNStiles replied to caffrey's topic in MIS Systems
He's right, just remove it from the environment and add it in again. Failing that you could try renaming the computer, as I take it you used the same machine name? -
Hi, We've recently been experiencing a large amount of not responding errors on SIMS installed on client PC's. The issue only seems to occur when saving assessment marksheets, following an edit or removing it from certain criteria, i.e. year group. After saving the assessment (and it doesn't happen everytime) SIMS will go blank and display not responding, where this usually lasts for 10-25 minutes and will eventually complete the save. Obviously the pulsar exe is what's hanging and upon viewing it in resource monitor (screenshot below) it doesn't appear to be hogging any resources - disk/RAM/network/cpu. I'm in contact with IMS, our local SIMS support team, but I just wanted to check and see if anyone else has experienced this issue in their environment? Thanks, Jay.

Found the solution. I was trying to flash version 3.01.15, which for some reason requires the file to be a .bin file before it is flashed. I went to version 3.01.05 and was able to flash that version, after flashing the corresponding .btm, .def and .web files that came with the firmware package. So basically, avoid V3.01.15.

Hi, Hopefully I've posted this in the right place... I'm having serious problems with this switch ---> 3Com 3CR17343-91. We had a packet storm and the switch now just cycles when bootingand displays "No correct default file to boot!" I've flashed the latest boot rom, and that worked. I tried to flash it with the latest software (version V3.01.15) using the .app filein the download, but before falshing it asked me to rename the file, as it was not a bin file. I tried to rename it to s4o03_01_15s168.bin, to match the .app file name as well as various other names, but it would not allow it. In the end I tried s4o03_01_15s168 with noextension and the flashing process accepted that. I now can't set this as the application file to boot, under option 3 of the boot menu, as nothing is displayed as an option. Is there a way around this? If not, can I get hold of software versions using .bin files? Thanks, Jay

Hi, I've installed the Nelson Thornes e-Mathematics software on to a shared directory from a test server, using this process: - Install server software - Share the directory on server - Copy files (dll files) from CD --> D:\JustClick\System32 and D:\JustClick\Systemordner in to the root directory C:\Program Files\Nelson Thornes - Run regsvr32 WaveControll.dll on server - Install Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.2_10 -- Default Machine Version 1.4.2_10-b03 -- Java Plug-in 1.4.2_10 I stumbled upon the need for the Java runtime environment after obtaining a java runtime error every time I attempted to run the software from the shared folder on the client. It now runs fine, EXCEPT... I cannot seem to run the Animation/Interaction resources, under resource finder, on the client. But I can when I launch the application from the server. Has anyone else experienced this? Found a solution? Thanks!

Doesn't work. Even when you use accounts that have never been logged on to the machine and have no profile in the registry, the same error occurs.

Just in case anyone has had this error recently, I thought I'd share a fix we found. The issue is to do with clients not being able to logon and displaying this error... We found various explanations online, but the most recent suggestions were that this was due to a January 2014 update. However, we recently upgraded IE in our suites to version 11, so who knows? Anyway, the error can be fixed by altering the NTFS permissions on C:\users\default (You'll need to show all hidden drives in order to see this folder) and select the "Replace all child objects permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" so that it is enabled This will allow users to login from then on. I can't explain why, as before making this change all subfolders and files have permissions that reflect the default user's. Anyway this can be done through GPO, under Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > File System. Hopefully this gets someone out of trouble!

It turns out we don't need to upgrade to 10.7 on the server, and that a client running 10.7 will suffice. You're all quite right though, 10.7 is rubbish.

We have have an OS X 10.6.8 server in a magic triangle setup with Active directory. I'm planning on upgrading to Lion and the Lion server app. I wanted to know if there would be any negative implications on the magic triangle setup with upgrading the server? Apple have good instructions on the server upgrade process but there's no mention of an OD/AD environment.

You're a genius, thank you! One thing I will add is that the app/script needs to be in the same file path location on the server!
-
Thanks for the reply. I've tried using Preferences>Login>Items before, but I didn't place the app in the /Users/Shared folder of the clients. I'll give it a go! Also I didn't have any luck creating an apple script with the script I've got, as it kept returning "unknown token" errors for a lot of the characters in the script and then errors such as "expected 'then' but found 'else'". I gave up and used the automator application to package the shell script in to an application. Could you possibly post the script you used? Maybe I can see where I'm going wrong!

Hi all, We have Macs (OS X 10.6.8) bound to AD/OD in the "Golden Triangle" setup, with workgroup manager on OS X 10.6.8 server managing some preferences. We have successfully managed to map staff and student shares through the login items preference on workgroup manager, mounting the drives to the desktop on user login. My issue is with mounting Windows home directories. Using the Automator application on a Mac client I built an app called HomeFolder.app that runs the shell script below, which WILL mount the home folder on the desktop (obviously this script is for staff accounts only) #!/bin/bash #pause for kerberos ticket #/bin/sleep 15 #get current logged in user cur_user=`/bin/ls -l /dev/console | awk '/ / { print $3 }'` #input full path of home folder home_folder="/Volumes/Home$/staff/$cur_user /Users/$cur_user/Desktop" #now make sure it is mounted if [[ -e $home_folder ]] then /bin/echo "home folder is mounted" else /sbin/mount_smbfs //10.0.48.39/home$/staff/$cur_user /Users/$cur_user/Desktop fi /bin/echo "done" exit 0 I've then placed the app in the login items on a Mac client under System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and taken a copy of the com.apple.loginitems plist from ~/Library/Preferences. I then placed it in workgroup manager > details. (this is how we have customised the dock, for example) with the hope that the app will run upon login. When I log on to a Mac client as a member of staff, the applications doesn't seem to run as there's no home folder mounted on the desktop. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong here? the application will run fine manually. This method must seem really ridiculous, but I've exhausted all other possibilities!

Is it possible to remove the entire "Go" menu as a whole, or can you only remove lower items such as Network, Utilities etc?
-
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I already have the license key, I'm just missing the disc for the software. Apple want proof of purchase in order to send out more media, but I have no records as it was bought before I started working here.

Hi, We've recently put out images to all of our Macs, including in that image an install of Final Cut Pro. After hours of hard work I was informed by a teacher that it was in fact Final Cut Express 4 that was needed. We don't have a copy of the software and I can't find a download for it anywhere, having spent an hour searching. Does anyone know where I may found a download I have overlooked? Thanks
