Gaz Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 With Windows XP coming to its End of Life are any of you replacing any of your XP machines before the April 8th deadline or are you waiting until after? I'm asking because I'm currently reimaging the Promethean board PC's that came with Win7 but are currently running XP, I am reimaging them with Win7. I've got some more in the Library that are still on XP but not sure If I'll be able to replace them before the April deadline.

At my governor school, there are a couple of PCs off the network running equipment in the technology rooms that don't have drivers for Win 7+

After April, anyone with XP on their laptop can either take the laptop and we never see it again, or they can come in to have Windows 7 installed (They've already been told). With the caveat that the majority of laptops are ancient (Fujitsu e8020) and will run like smeg on 7.

localzuk Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Pretty much all gone here. Only remaining ones are a couple of embedded systems and some netbooks. The vast majority of our computers are now i5, with some Core2Duos in a few spots. So, we're happy with Windows 7. The netbooks are being moved to Linux soon, and the embedded systems will be due for replacement in a year. (5 year lives) There's some old and pretty much dead machines with XP on in Art but they haven't been turned on for a year and I've had no complaints!

Chuckster Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 All machines were replaced with newer hardware that came with Windows 7 on it at the beginning of the year. Only 3 machines still run XP - my own machine (I can't seem to let go of it), 2 standalone machines where one runs our key fob system and the other is used to monitor pool temperature.
stevewill6 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I have 250 PCs give or take with XP on currently, 200 of those should not have a problem running Windows 7 but the other 50 are borderline. I don't have licencing to do it yet waiting for the EES renewal in March. Its going to be a busy few weeks.
sted Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 some will in some schools but only because they are old fujitsu e2500's with 512mb ram the school wont spend money on them (have ees so licenses arnt an issue) but im no going to run win7 on 512k ram as it will probably make them unusable. Theres also probably odd pcs knocking round various schools that just for various reasons arnt up to the job or are somewhere ive forgotten where

gmonks Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Got 2 standalone Windows XP machines, one for a astronomy program in the Science lab, the other for a program in the DT room. We also have some laptops with XP, but they're being replaced after Christmas.

If you have EES already, you have the licences already, unless someone has done something weird with the licensing. It's based on MS peculiar definition of Full Time Equivalent staff (200 hours/year? How's that full time?) rather than on number of boxes, so you should already have the licences.

Michael Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 You can of course use Windows XP after April 2014, but it's generally a bad idea. You're potentially opening yourself to a number of problems and it just isn't worth the hassle. I predict the number of XP installs late 2013, early 2014 will rapidly decline and Windows 7 will be no.1 for quite some time.

3s-gtech Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Just one XP machine - it'll have to stay as it runs the laser cutter which has rubbish driver support. I'm just planning to drop it off the domain and have a local user account. Also, we got rid of all Windows 8 PCs this week - they're all on 8.1 (but there are only four ).
