What do you use as your Intranet?

We currently use a very old sharepoint services box for our staff intranet:( its beginning to creek but it still working just! Time to change. So what do you use? transparent authentication is a must I think.

This is pretty much what we have. A LAMP server with a few info boxes with links, network status, helpdesk link and a Google search box. Although staff usually type Google into the search box then search from the results page, so it may as well just be a link.

We have a Plone server running a basic welcome screen, some links to email, moodle etc and a log into a staff secure area.

 

Thinking about ditching it for a Spiceworks page to incorporate call logging and knowledge base.

 

Or just share point it.

Same as NewFormz, we just use the staff section of our externally-hosted website at the moment, plus a massive network area for Departmental resources internally. We are looking at shifting it to a locally-hosted Moodle installation though, which I think will be good

IIS Server with PHP and MySQL - Uses Windows Auth to grab student username, then does a lookup on MySQL to retrieve their timetable from SIMS (That has already been imported)

 

- Notifications System to classes/groups like the Chess Club etc (Teachers can set these up and send them to kids)

- Google Search with typeahead

 

All built in house

Wow, that is very nice @SovietRussia!

 

I don't suppose you'd consider sharing that? at least the script that makes up that page! Quite like the idea of presenting AD related info.

 

On topic, our students get a very simple HTML page with a grid of quicklinks, whereas our staff get a slightly enhanced version of the same, but it's powered by Wordpress.

I also like @SovietRussia. The idea of the SIMS timetable on the "dashboard" is ace. This could be useful for both staff and students.

 

Would this be able to talk to an exchange server so it could show a section of the users inbox to show how many new items they have.

 

Also a so called message/notificatiom board would be nice too.

At the mo we use SharePoint 2012? We are very soon moving to Joomla. With differing levels of IT experience, the staff find updating SP far too cumbersome. Joomla offers more control too, in getting the site to look like we want.

Single HTML/PHP page on IIS. Google search, couple of useful links (whole school calendar, cover list, network helpdesk, etc), as well as self-service password reset, student username lookup and student password changes (stops them bothering us when a student "forgets" their password!).

Thanks for the replies guys there certainly is a lot of variation. Looking at SP foundation maybe Joomla with a document management component I quite like the sound of some of the custom solutions aswell

We use Google Sites as intranet pages, although staff usually ignore anything thats put on there.

We use a Mindtouch server locally hosted that we have re skinned and customized. Works fantastic. We started out using the free version back when it was available and supported, but purchased an Edu license for the commercial version in a short window when they offered such a thing before they took it to a hosted only version and jacked the price up considerably.

 

The open source version is still available, but updates are going to be almost non-existent in future. A shame too, because Mindtouch platform was one of the best things you could build an Intranet on. Still is IF you can afford Mindtouch TCS.

In theory, it can integrate with Exchange, as the login details are shared across the sites - no idea on the coding side though as that's SR's baby. It already has a notification board system that is individualised for year groups and users, it appears at the top.
