CAM Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 It is just an aesthetic change to help those who couldn't find the Start button. Having been an early adopter of Win 8, not much core functionality has changed TBH (at least not immediately noticeable).
Jamoire Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Anyone having any issues downloading from VLSC ? Gets to about 4% and dies, tried at home and work using download manager and browser (chrome and IE) I guess it's maybe still busy Yep, doing the same for me. Havn't been able to get 8.1 or anything else from there since yesterday.
Rawns Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 (edited) Still cannot find the update in the store, really frustrating! Tried wsreset in command line like you guys suggested but this did not fix the problem. I have even removed the KB2871389 update and reinstalled it manually but again nothing.... Any ideas guys? It did not show on my Win 8 VM until I installed all available Windows updates! Had about 40 outstanding. Installed them all, rebooted and it then showed in the Store. Right so, I get all that that it has been well known if you look hard enough about this start menu business... so my next point is what does the start button actually do that I didn't have before? I had that little pop out mini metro switcher, and my windows Burton on my keyboard!!! The only useful thing I've found is that if you right click it, you get access to a load of admin related utilities. Apart from that, it simply loads Metro. Edited October 18, 2013 by Rawns
themightymrp Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Yep, doing the same for me. Havn't been able to get 8.1 or anything else from there since yesterday. Mine barely starts and then drops in speed to about 15Kb/s Tried getting it yesterday afternoon and managed to get to 1GB complete before it just stopped. I guess the download site is getting a lot of hammer
caffrey Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 At least it's not me, shame as I wanted to test this today
Gatt Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 If you think the download is slow, wait til it reboots! took about an hour to get through all the various stages The longest bits were Setting up a few more things xx% Complete = 30 minutes! then after first login there is a few more (setting up apps, etc) then: Almost ready = 45 minutes!
Rawns Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Anyone noticed that upgrading to 8.1 seems to naff up the .NET 3.5 software breaking any apps that use it?
LosOjos Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 still no sign of update on my store! and ive used the MAK key on my pro edition. dont know why this is not done as a windows update, wouldve made life soo much easy!! Are you checking the Store "Updates" tab? If so, ye've gan too faarrr! It's on the Store homepage. That's right, not only is it not a Windows Update, the method we've come to expect to receive OS updates, it's not even a Store update! #MakesSense
jmr Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Are 8.1 and 2012 R2 showing up in VLSC? Can't see anything here.
DevilsAdvocate Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Got both on our VLSC. Not that I can download either currently!
Sheridan Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I've given up for this for today at least. My W8 test laptop hangs when running updates. VLSC won't download it (gets to about 10% at best before dropping out) For all the build up its fallen flat at the moment!
Dos_Box Posted October 18, 2013 Author Posted October 18, 2013 I've just had to download and install about a GB of driver updates from Asus for my Z87-Deluxe board. Bit of a pain that. However, all being said and done, well done Asus for having brand new 8.1 drivers available for download straight away!
smithson83 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Same a @jmr, not seeing anything in VLSC, I take it it should appear in the download list just below Windows 8?
LeMarchand Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Only just managed to get on VLSC (let me log in, but not go to downloads all morning), and I can't even find it!
funkyfin2000 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Windows 8 Pro here on MAK licence and nothing VLSC or on Windows Store...any ideas peeps?
tech_guy Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I think we need to start a petition to get a proper MS Start Menu Button and Menu back. Perhaps that'll be Windows 8 v8.2?
Sheridan Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 My Store is now broken! When I click it, it opens and then closes again straight away. With VLSC knackered I guess I'll be waiting a long time to try out 8.1!
synaesthesia Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Anyone else trying to get it from VLSC finding it ironic how the download manager even fails? That's the whole bloody point of it!
funkyfin2000 Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Be great if I could even see it in there! What category is it under? Windows?
siuko Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Biggest thing that I learnt from it.... RTFM before install lol... Nvidia drivers needed to be up to date - which mine weren't - so got a black screen and had to roll back
theriver Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 We use Kaspersky here - a colleague has just installed without reading up on compatibility first, and is currently weeping into his keyboard.
clywedog Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Just spoke to MS, they said it should appear early next week in our VLSC, the USA are getting it first... 1
Sheridan Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I just searched for Windows 8 Pro in the search box - doesn't matter as you can't download it anyway!
caffrey Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I'm getting 4KB/Sec, I'll have it in 243 hours (That's if it doesn't bomb out at 9%...) Think I'll just wait!
