Still cannot find the update in the store, really frustrating! Tried wsreset in command line like you guys suggested but this did not fix the problem. I have even removed the KB2871389 update and reinstalled it manually but again nothing.... Any ideas guys?

It's not an MSDN ISO, Enterprise SKU or activated via KMS is it?

Think someone mentioned that these wont show in the store

No its just a standard retail copy of Windows 8 Pro :( May just be server issues I will just have to be patient :)

Try running wsreset from cmd...

Edit: ignore that because I didn't read poat above!

Home laptop okay now except it reverted to a full retard American keyboard so thank God for the option to select a UK keyboard to get my password in. Talk about a long-winded process to upgrade from v8 to v8.1 - makes me wonder if what we've got is a major re-write of code here.

Stand by for some fun methinks. At least with my little home IT business I might be getting some work out of this :)

Oh I see... Microsoft plainly lied then/ There is no start menu, just takes you to a metro screen with all your apps install...

I feel dirty... really really dirty...

I don't see how MS lied, since they always said the Start button would open the Start Screen in 8.1.

Agree they didn't lie but they did mislead; claiming that the Start button is back would clearly make most users believe the old start menu was back too

I don't understand why people thought that would actually happen.

It would be like Microsoft removing the ribbon from Office 2013 and reverting back to the old 2003-style interface. It would never happen when you think about it logically.

Erm, just been over half a year's controversy on the subject in the tech media. It's a very well known piece of intrigue for Win 8.1

You can make it less jarring though by setting the Start background to be the same as your desktop, actually looks quite nice if very Unity-like. Doesn't fix the primary issue of Metro apps being sub-par for desktop though. Can anyone find the Boot to Desktop option by the way? Settings are still a total mess in Win 8 and scattered everywhere.

Anyone having any issues downloading from VLSC ? Gets to about 4% and dies, tried at home and work using download manager and browser (chrome and IE)

I guess it's maybe still busy

@CAM The boot to desktop option is in the taskbar properties.

I'd have expected to find it in something like MSCONFIG's Startup tab or PC Settings app in Metro. Shows how messy and disjointed the settings management has become. >.<

Right so, I get all that that it has been well known if you look hard enough about this start menu business... so my next point is what does the start button actually do that I didn't have before? I had that little pop out mini metro switcher, and my windows Burton on my keyboard!!!
