They are planning on switching to the 2015 engine after the 4 "flyaways", but it depends on when they can complete the 2015 chassis and where they are in the engine cycle as they are still limited to the 4 engines a year like the rest of the grid.

You never know, they might out qualify JB and KM next weekend!!

Alonso had a bit of a Hot Crash Time Machine moment at test 2, it seems: Fernando Alonso 'could not recall the last 20 years of his life after testing crash' | Sky Sports

When a fighter suffers retrograde amnesia doctors will declare them unfit to fit for a number of weeks. Standard practice. Why is everyone so shocked when they have done the same with Alonso? It is especially dangerous to have TBI close to one another, causing high ICP and such. Not surprised at all they recommended that he sits this one out, and good on him for doing so.

Does anyone else think that crash was very odd...

He was on the straight after exiting turn 4 at 130ish mph and the car appears to jump into the wall not front on or 45 degrees but hitting the wall fully side on and yet the only external damage was the front spoiler, yet inside they reckon a lot of internal components suffered huge damage. The explanation of a gust of wind upsetting the cars balance is at odds with the load on the front and rear wings at that speed he'd be pushed into the track which makes me wonder if a wing failed first.. Don't know and there's no video footage yet but it doesn't add up.

Hope he's okay

It was mid corner turn 4, he hadn't made the straight when it happened. I don't think they have found any real damage (internal or external) beyond the damage caused when he went over the grass, certainly all the press releases from McLaren state the car was basically undamaged and they called for an investigation. Vettel's car which was behind Alonso had a camera on it, so they have that footage to analysis, though I doubt it will show anything revealing.

I don't think the wind pushed him into the track wall - from what I gathered, it pushed him slightly off-line, onto the astroturf, at which point he lost grip and crashed off. Agreed that it's an odd angle and an unusual amount of secrecy around it, although that latter could be a habit of Ron Dennis's that he can't break.

The same incident has happened numerous times before at that corner, Maldonado was the most recent with an almost identical crash. I'm not really sure what to make of it, I don't really see what an investigation would find in this circumstance, and I don't see why McLaren would call for one if they had something to hide.

Maldonado's was more right hand front, ripping the wheel off, Alonso's was square on, and the fact he braked and changed down but didn't try to steer is weird.. Think its being investigated because of this and the fact people(well journalists) are saying 'was he unconscious before he hit the wall??'

Yeah Maldonado's was at an angle Alonso's basically hit the wall side on, that's why it's only almost identical and not identical. In terms of position however they were at the same point on the track and both experienced a gust of wind. You can reason therefore that Alonso probably did touch the astroturf as a result and lost the rear but recovered before hitting the wall as he was travelling substantially slower than Maldonado was at the time.

The speculation that he lost conciousness before hitting the wall is just that I think, speculation.

Brundle tweeted about this. Apparently, the teams have to stay until 2020 to gain from the TV rights deal and other pieces...so if they pulled out, they wouldn't get the huge payout. Or some such...

Yep Red bull have a Bernie contract to stay until 2020, however rumors that STR might be bought by Renault are now circulating and could at least reduce some of the costs that Red Bull put's into F1.....

Shame JB didn't have much of a race, but it was good to see the battle he had with Perez for a couple of laps... and he noticed that they were better in corners than some of the cars that lapped him, even with the reduced engine power so that bodes well for later in the season once they turn the wick up.... McHonda are thinking about changing the race mindset, and I think they might as well go hell for leather in FP1 at the next race and slap Jensons engine all they way up to 11 and see what happens... heck if only so it even outs the number of engines both JB and FA will have for the rest of the year :)

I agree, that Renault engine is no more powerful than last year but judging from the drivers comments it seems to be even worse to drive.

They raced with the 2014 engine, they haven't homologated the 2015 engine so they can't use it yet.

the first race was ...well, a bit boring to be honest. If there's no major changes this is going to be a very poor season. On a different tack I 've been watching the Formula E on ITV4 and last weeks race at Miami was spectacular. Nail biting stuff from start to finish.

So why are the drivers saying it's "Driveability" is worse than last year? Just software changes? Horner is saying that they are 100bhp down right now, but he doesn't mention that its the old design.

I don't think they did - there's no homolgation this year because of this tokens malarkey, and Horner said the engine this weekend was a step back from the one at the final test. They have developed the engine from 2014, they've just developed it the wrong way.

Posted

I'm sure that during the AskCrofty segment at the end of the third test he said that all engines had to be submitted by the 28th Feb so that the number of tokens used could be averaged for Honda.

The Homologation rule has become very murky since Ferrari managed to find the development loophole.

No you still have to homolgate the engine, there just isn't a date set in the regulations, so you can use tokens to upgrade the engine, then you must homologate it and then you can use it.

You cannot use a non-homolgated engine in F1. So it's pretty understandable that the one they raced with is a step backwards from the one they tested, they probably tested a partially upgraded 2014(2015) engine and then reverted to the 2014 engine. The chassis of course being built around the upgraded one. If on the other hand they are running a non-homolgated 2015 engine then they are in breach of the regulations, specifically:

5.22 Replacing power unit parts :

Refer to the table in Appendix 2 of these regulations.

The parts listed as “EXC” in the table referred to above may be changed without incurring a

penalty under Article 28.4 of the F1 Sporting Regulations. If changing any of these parts

involves breaking a seal this may be done but must be carried out under FIA supervision. Any

parts changed may only be replaced by parts homologated in accordance with Appendix 4 of

the F1 Sporting Regulations

Well Honda has done some tweaks and they still have all 9 of their tokens to use later in the season which could still be useful.

The new colour scheme is better, but not really bright enough. At least Hass F1 should be bringing some colour to 2016 if they stick with the rumoured Yellow scheme.
