XiJ Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I'll get used to the V6 and I think they'll sound good with the turbos. Bit disappointed Ted Kraviz didn't need earphones. Those V8s were loud in the flesh - TV doesn't do then justice. I remember people complaining about the V8's when we moved from V10. The noses are fugly tho. Caterham worst by a mile. The merc deserves to win on looks alone.
teejay Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I don't think they're giving the engines full beans yet, I'm sure they'll be plenty loud enough. Yes the Mercedes looks good, the McLaren looks pretty good as well, plus they've got some nifty rear suspension which is going to be difficult to copy. I've a feeling its going to be Mercedes vs McLaren for the title. It looks like Renault may have really messed up with their engine, they're certainly already playing catchup to the Merc engine. Oh yes, we also have the Toro Rosso with the nose inspired by the Ann Summers catalogue

Yeah, would like to see mclaren do well again. I was hoping they might bring the orange - or the red / white livery back. They currently look too much like the merc. Do like the rear wishbone aero parts tho. The force India also has a large and ugly gentleman appendage. In order of lookers the championship will be Mercedes Lotus Red Bull (courtesy of paint scheme) Mclaren Ferrari Williams Sauber Force India Caterham Not sure where marussia will fit in. I'm so excited for the new season though.

synaesthesia Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I think many would disagree. My favourite in recent years is the 2008 McLaren. Having sat on it and damn nearly in it, the amount of wings, the art, the curves, it was *awesome*. But each to their own. I like the sound so far, but I will miss the ear splitting noise they make which was unmistakeable. World Series by Renault days were the best tell, you'd wander around Silverstone and could hear all the poncy little Renault single seaters go around. Get a little more exited with the 3.5 litre ones, then over the top of 20 of those things going round a track, WAY over the top, a lone F1 engine fires up and boy do you know it. Not even anywhere near it, half way around the track! Hoping the Mercs do well. I am a fan of McLaren but fear they have made a HUGE mistake taking on that lying trumped up french salesman. I don't know what exactly went on with Whitmarsh and I've little doubt he was little more than a salesman/PR guy too but Bouillier is in the Apple league of bullpoo spouters.

I think it seems strange to call (say) a 2013 F1 car 'ugly' or 'beautiful'. F1 cars have very particular design constraints that necessitate they look like ... a (year X) F1 car. If I want beautiful ... a Ferrari 458 simply doesn't have those constraints, it is all curves, shiny baubles and just, oh just, yummm. Then again I think all F1 cars are 'beautiful' in their own right. Form follows function, between the constraints is imagination which is ... always beautiful.

Something that would produce maximum downforce without sacrificing outright speed without tyre slashing wings or noses in dire need of plastic surgery. Remembering what was going on in 1991 and 1992 is a good example, now things have come so much further...

I won't spoil anything for those waiting for the highlights, but Mercedes, with one small token "let the drivers get on with it" have done more good PR for themselves and F1 as a whole in the midst of a dominance debate (bit early for that but still one that's being had) than either Ferrari or Red Bull ever did in their years of dominance. Just let them drive and see what happens. Those guys have big, brass balls.
XiJ Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Absolutely brilliant race. Those mercs are seriously quick and fantastic driving. How Lewis held of rosberg was outstanding. Rosberg looked really annoyed actually - like any racer would initially. And great racing down the field - force India and Ricciardo in particular. How MALdanado doesn't get banned I've no idea. The man is a danger.
penfold_99 Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 I finally saw some of the highlights of an F1 race, 3 things stood out for me, racing seems to finally be back, I'm confused with all the livery changes, force India isn't orange and Williams is now white. The sound does make a difference but they should just stick a mike in the engines and it will be fixed for tv viewers.

Love the racing so far and the fact that we have cars that all look different and have innovative designs. As well as the efficiency / energy recovery. Ferrari and red bull can do one

synaesthesia Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Oddly enough for me to say it (especially as someone who wants to see Maldonado banned (I have some more colourful nicknames but even BTRD they'd be severely frowned upon even if Frankie Boyle saw them)) it wasn't entirely Maldonado's fault. Looked worse than it was, he was entirely in Gui's blind spot and had nowhere to go. Very definition of an accident, if there's fault to be apportioned, then perhaps to the design of the pit exit. You could tell it took HAM and ROS right back to their karting days by how they acted afterwards. Nico clearly wasn't happy but why would he be, he's just lost out to the person he want's to beat the most. Hamilton is clearly the fastest driver in F1 and is easily becoming a great all rounder to boot as he grows up, but Nico doesn't see it that way. He has something to prove. The moment Nico "tackled" Lewis in parc fermé goes to show these two have an awesome respect for eachother but have quite easily gone back to when they were kids, doing what they love most without anyone interfering with their racing with politics. That's how it should be. Is it also wrong that I giggled IMMENSELY when they told Vettel that Ricciardo was faster than him? Even more so when Daniel overtook him when they were on an even keel?

I thought it would only be a matter of time till Maldonado was involved in yet another direct crash, not the first, second or even the third time he has done it. He drives like I used to play F1 96 where I used other cars to break and my rivals would get a clip on the front wing so they were out of the picture.
