Just taken this call: End User: My computer just went bang. Tech_Guy: Just went bang? End User: Yes, I was using it and it just went bang. Tech_Guy: Bang as in bang? End User: Yes. A big bang. Tech_Guy: A big bang? End User: Yes, a big bang. Tech_Guy: Was there smoke or anything? End User: Yes, and a big flash. Tech_Guy: So your PC went bang with smoke and a big flash? End User: Yes. Tech_Guy: What were you doing on it at the time? End User: I was changing the switch on the back from 230v to 120v I thought it would save electricity.... 8O

witch Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Actually, I have had three cases of this since I became a techie: Two males and one female I shall not get cross with the implication that women do this sort of thing (calm, think calm) because you and all the others know that men are just as likely to do this - in fact, often they are more likely to do things that involve interfering with physical settings on computers. So, I shall rise above it all !

Lol, even though these posts are in jest, I have to point out that I agree with you more then you know . I tend to think that on the whole, women have a LOT more common sense then men. Lol. Being a male, I can safely say this without fearing cries of sexism However that is not to say that women don't have their bad points... lol.

I agree - some of the dumbest stupidest things I've encountered in the world of IT have been perpetrated by men....

contink Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 Did find this hilarious but then I can't help but feel a twinge of "ouch" like empathy pain as I remember situations I've managed. - An hour trying to figuring out why a PCs screen won't work and having my sister solve the problem by plugging in the right lead. - Asking a housemate to check an extension cord was long enough while I had the stripped live and neutral wires in my hand only to realise he'd plugged the damn thing in and flipped it on (thank **ck for rubber shoes!) - Replacing RAM in a PC that had a whisper quiet PSU... Well I thought it was off. Perhaps I'm a muppet and perhaps I've just had longer to make dumb mistakes... Who knew

Joedetic Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 I did a smiliar thing with the electric shock...I was re-patching a lantern on the lighting rig during a rehearsal and didnt fade off the channel cause it was part of a scene in the memory and it would have meant killing all the lights (idiot lighing desk ). The round pin 15A sockets that lighting uses doesnt have the insulated part of the live and neutral pins...i caught my fingers on the two.......it hurt. I was in year 9 at the time.

maniac Posted August 22, 2007 Posted August 22, 2007 You kinda never forget getting 240v down your arm. Happened to me at a house I was renting, electrics weren't working in the garage so I switched them off at the fusebox in the house before opening up the fusebox in the garage to check the wiring. Found out the damn thing was still live when I touched one of the terminals and got a massive shock down my arm! Some idiot had bypassed the isolating switch in the house (It most probably kept tripping due to the state of the wiring in the garage) so whatever you did to the switch, the garage circuit was always on. Learnt my lesson on that one! Mike.
