Blood Donation

I donated blood today, any would encourage everyone else to do the same! This week is National Blood Week, you can often just head into your local center without an appointment. Process takes less than an hour, and you could help to save/improve 3 peoples lives; plus lots of free drinks, snacks, and stickers!

I try to give blood when ever they have a day near me, but there appointment times are not practical for 9-5 jobs.

I would do but I am in one of the many you cannot categories so am unable to.

 

I do however think that those categories in some cases are seriously outdated and not appropriate any longer.

I am going on Monday for my 30th(ish) time...It's a chance for a nice lie down although now we have to sit in a fancy seat tipped back with legs in the air!

Banned here too. Only ever managed to donate twice and then picked up a permanent ban! My son, many years ago, was 'suckered' into going to donate to keep a couple of mates company. Neither of the 'mates' were able to donate but son was young, healthy and accepted! He donated his armful, went to get up and passed out.... He was so embarrassed that he's never been back.

Due in again tomorrow, my twenty-somethingth donation... do anything for a cup of tea, me. My record is something like 4m15s to squeeze that pint out, I'm determined to get below 4 minutes. It'll be my Roger Bannister moment.

@Alkaline - every session I've ever seen has run up till 8pm, so it may just be the session you keep checking - there might be one on a different rotation at a different venue in town that will suit you.

I've donated 4 times every year since I turned 17, then when they changed it to 3 times I was 21. I am now 27 and passed my 35th donation last week

They seem quite laid back when ever I go for one, only do the iron test and thats it.

Have been a donor for a couple of years now - my next armful is due in August. 100% agree that you should donate if you can, you never know when you or someone you know might need it someday!

 

I'd also strongly recommend getting put on the bone marrow register (ask when you go to donate blood, they take a sample from your donation and send it off).

My local place takes bookings up to 7pm...

 

I donate every time I can, not as much as I would like this past year due to having a new tattoo and being on tablets for stomach ulcer

I used to be a regular donor until I had a transfusion myself, now they wont touch me. I miss my free tea and buscuits

My 10th is due soon, I like the Mario coin pickup sound when the machine gets going Always seems to take a while to get anything out of me, it has been known for them to start packing up around me and the lights going off! (I'm usually the last in)

I'm booked in for session number 3 next month.

 

The first time I tried to give blood they could not get a vein, the second time they got a pint but I almost passed out. The last time was smooth sailing, the nurse got the needle in with almost no pain and the needed did not feel uncomfertable either. Lets hope they are all like that.

 

On topic, what blood groups are people? Any rare ones here? I'm B+ which I believe is 8% of the population.

I think I'm up to 27 on the next donation next month.

 

Signed up when I was 17 but had a long stretch of time when I only managed once a year which has knocked my count.

 

I'm also on the bone marrow list and have once been asked for permission to have one of my sample thawed out but wasn't a match from that.

Same here.

 

To the people here to dont give but could, I give blood even though I have an issue with blood (I passed out at the birth of my oldest). I just dont look at what they are doing and let them get on with it. Luckily, I donate really quickly, most of the time I catch the staff of guard as I am finished before they are expecting it!

I've just gotten a text from Donors reminding me of my appointment tonight, that's new. And useful!

 

On the topic of blood types, you may be interested in how the Japanese would perceive you - blood type is like astrology to them: Blood types in Japanese culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (there's actually been a politician resign with something along the lines of "I'm sorry, I couldn't help it, I'm blood type B so it's in my nature).

 

And everyone should be an organ donor. I just wish it was an opt-out system, not an opt-in.

@tech_guy I have already written in my will that my body can go to science and organ transplant. the brain can be used for whatever they want (testing for migraines, balance disorders, both of which I suffer), the heart, eyes liver, kidneys and lungs are on the organ transplant list, and the body can be used as a cadaver for forensic anthropologists to study body decomposition. I spoke with my family about it and they are happy with my wishes.
