kaphc Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I've done this module a couple of years ago, and wouldn't recommend it (I've done 10 other modules to complete my degree with the OU and so that's saying something!) The first block is the Network+ stuff which is not too bad, the course book is OK and the content is great. But the second two modules rely heavily on Microsoft materials, which is all well and good for a while, but gets very dull reading through their robotic presentations. Then trying to get onto their virtual servers to complete the exercises was a nightmare - let's just say I ended up doing some of my assignments at 1am as it was the only time I could get on. If you want to take the Microsoft exams at the end, then obviously that costs extra so you need to factor that in. That said, there were SO many complaints and dropouts about this module in the year I did it, that the OU must surely have done something about it since then. The course directors and administrators gave it everything to be able to sort the issues out. If you are seriously thinking about paying money for this module, check out what improvements they have made - and also compare the costs with just going to a Microsoft training centre directly. If you want any more info, just let me know.

Yeah it wasn't great for the first two presentations, mainly due to the MS online labs which were not very reliable to say the least. The decision was taken to switch over to using virtual machines via VirtualBox last year and whilst that isn't a perfect solution, it's a much better than relying on the online labs. I'm a tutor for the TM128 and have been since it started, so if anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

The point they were making to me was if someone came from France/Germany/Spain they would get a hugely cheaper rate in Scotland compared to someone from England. I realise if your from Scotland and go to a Scotish university you get it free, I didn't realise that from England you pay a lot more the France/Germany/Spain/anywhere else in the EU. (being close to the border you here a lot more about all these things)

It is not "the Scots" it is the many nationalities who reside in Scotland. My sister lives in a town north if the border that is predominantly made up of English residents who I am led to believe moved for a better quality of life. Their sons and daughters now enjoy the benefits of higher education!!There are many discrepancies around the country. We all are aware if the health post code lottery and that can be at a county level. So. Not sure how we can make everything equal to all. Perhaps a move to Cuba, N Korea may be the way forward? 1

Same here Is the OU based in Scotland then?... The OU has several regional offices, however students are all over the world.
