Supporting Parents/Guardians with Cloud based Systems
jimmckenna replied to jimmckenna's topic in General Chat
Hi, thanks for the replies!! We do have an email address and also have several help sheets for parents. What is happening now is the pressure is growing to telephone parents and offer verbal support. Particularly, with parents who are not tech-savvy. Having now made a couple of calls you can be on the phone for 20 mins + easily, going round in circles. Is there any schools offering telephone support. My view on this is that we are not a call centre. Interested if other support teams in schools are seeing this development. Cheers -
General question this one!! Are you finding that you are being asked to support parents/guardians accessing cloud based systems? I am talking about parental access to VLE's or MIS type systems. Login issues, General Help Requests etc etc. Not school devices, personal devices. I have resisted this so far as it would add a potential support population of 3000+ for me to support, in addition to everything else. Granted that many parents are Tech "savvy" these days, many are not !! Just asking for other experiences. Do you support parents? Where do you draw the line? Are management asking you to support? Have you had more staff (doubt it!!) Any feedback much appreciated!!

VoIP - How have you set up your School?
jimmckenna replied to jimmckenna's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Many many thanks for the replies. The one down side is loss of internet in school, all phones would also be down, hosted or cloud hosted. Any comments about reliability? experience so far of using such a service. I can see there would be cost savings if no new internal PBX required. So is it a balance between costs of new internal infrastructure v possible loss of service. As it happens no internet at school at the moment, problems with Talk Talk infrastructure, I believe -
VoIP - How have you set up your School?
jimmckenna replied to jimmckenna's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hi, thanks for the quick reply!! Just to confirm, I would not need to change the ageing PBX in school as all voice would use my FTTP broadband connection? -
Hi, this is a new area for me? Bear with!! How have you setup your systems? Seems to be multiple options? Hosted v Cloud Hosted? Current phone system Analogue with old PBX in place? Do I need to really procure a completely new PBX before I even consider what type of VOIP I should look at? Current broadband have FTTP and the potential to obtain 1gbps on 1 gig bearer. Location is a High school with approximately 40 handsets required. I also have one other school (smaller first school), different site, that has a leased line option of 100/1000 only 6 handsets required. Could I use the broadband connection only and reduce costs by eliminating the costs of a PBX, and other associated hardware? Any suggestions advice much appreciated!! Cheers

[sims] Start Time Incorrect on Student Timetable
jimmckenna replied to jimmckenna's topic in MIS Systems
Many thanks for the info will have a look at that and update!! Have a safe week-end!! -
Hi, any Nova T specialists advise where the start time can be changed please. We use TASC Insight for student and parent portal. This synchs with SIMS.net and presents parents and students with a display of the weekly timetable. At the moment this is displaying a time of 08:50 it should be 08:40 Any pointers how I can fix this would be great. I have a relatively new timetabler and they are unsure how to fix> TIA

The growth of Teams continues at my location and now looking to to deal with this request. Looking at integration of the outlook calendar into the user calendar within Teams. I use Locker (formerly ruler) to pull through students timetables into their web outlook in 365. Now being asked can they integrate this calendar into Teams where student remote live sessions are displayed. Appreciate any advice on this one!! TIA

Hi thanks for the reply. Not using Intune at this time for devices. Using AD for local PC's on domain. Looking to deploy via GPO and configure Teaching staff would prefer this to using the web browser version. Thanks again!!

Hi, quick question. Has anybody installed the desktop Version of Teams on their network? Interested if you have, how you achieved this and issues encountered? TIA
-
Hi, I'm afraid I have to admit I live in the "real world" and if there is no money available in school budgets, as most us have to deal with at the moment then price plays a huge part in choice!!

Using ebuyer for twelve years plus. In that time returned many items without any problems. My main gripe with them is delivery through Yodel. Have asked them not to use Yodel but alas still continue. Interested, to find out who you use as an alternative? My business manager allows me to use the ebuyer online purchase method which assists with speed of order and without to much paperwork. Looking at something similar to this order process.

GDPR and Staff E-mail
jimmckenna replied to gopher_1999's topic in Data Protection & Information Handling
What about this one? I am being told that Google Mail/Suite is not GDPR compliant as there servers are located in ROI. Whereas, Microsoft. Office 365 are compliant as there servers are in the UK? Confused ?????????? -
Hi, there is an app for both android and IOS devices available in the respective stores. I think it is an "add on" you pay a little extra for. No to much if I recall circa £180 . Good for students who all have mobile devices and more and more parents using to. I agree with you about notification of upgrades. Usually their support will advise to upgrade to the latest version when you are having any problems and report this on their helpdesk. I did ask about being notified when an upgrade would be available. I was informed that any updates are usually released to fix issues. If you are not having any issues, you do not need to upgrade!! Strange but that was the offering I received. Cheers

Further update on this in case any other user of TASC Insight App gets the same problem. Android app working OK. IOS devices running the latest version 10.2.1 (14D27) are not receiving an audible or visible warning of message received. They do receive the message into the Notice inbox. TASC support are aware and looking into this.
-
Hi quick question for TASC Insight users specifically about the App for IOS & Android. Recently, when we push a notice via Notice Manager the recipient is not getting any visible or audible warning on their mobile device. This is affecting both Android and IOS devices despite the app being setup correctly on the mobile device to advise of a new message. The actual message is received and is in the notice area of of Insight for each recipient. It is the audible and visual element of the push notifcation that is not working. Have been in contact with TASC and my ISP but still no resolution. The app's worth now is devalued as it no longer prompts the user. Just asking if any other location has experienced this and what the resolution was. Ay other advice gtreatly appreciated!! Cheers
