localzuk Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I'm getting used to it on the few 2012 servers I've got in place now. Its annoying but livable.

I don't think anyone likes it at first, and that is the problem. I just don't understand why people are settling with it, and putting up with it. Why not hold back at Win 7 & Server 08R2, or Ubuntu? Consumers don't seem to like metro, and that is a problem for M$, and very evident in there sales figures, Windows 'Blue'/9 needs to shape up and address these problems, or M$ will loose their already falling market share to the likes of Apple, and Linux. Rant over!

That article basically says MS currently have 15% of the global OS market now, but it will rise to 19% by 2017. Not bad for a company that had 95% marketshare 10yrs ago. Windows is becoming a niche market if you look at what students bring into school under BYOD.

Microsoft's percentage has shrunk because there are simply more devices being sold today than there was a decade ago. 95% of 1 billion is 950,000,000, whereas 19.3% of 2,964,783,000 (total devices shipped in 2017 according to Gartner) is 572,203,119. They try and keep it likewise so when using Remote Desktop Services a familiar look to end users. Windows 7/2008 R2 and now Windows 8 /Server 2012. The GUI still takes a bit of getting used to on server
Gatt Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Aren't MS considering ending the Server GUI line soon anyway? With 2012 the default option when you install is Server CORE, and then "Server with a GUI" (SWAG). Even then SWAG has the ability to drop in and out of CORE. With most of MS Server apps now switching to PowerShell I doubt it will be long.
Mr_Jiminy Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I think the new UI works well on the sever OS... Admittedly it wasn't all smiles from the start, but after a few weeks I found the UI provides much quicker access to install services/ software.

zag Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I actually decided to stick with 2008 R2 for our domain upgrade because of this awful interface on the server edition, despite a few welcome improvements. I wonder what windows 8.1 will bring to server 2012. Hopefully they have listened.
