Watching Star Wars for the first time - What Order?

I've decided I'm gonna watch Star Wars for the first time to see what all the Jedi fuss is about. So, for those in the know, what order should I watch it in? The original 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 or The new 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6?

I recently watched it in something called Machete Order which might be interesting, made me forget about Episode 1, even though it was the first I ever saw (I'm still a young'un, don't hurt me for that )

 

Basic idea is that you watch IV, V, II, III, VI. In order to follow Luke's story with the Vader reveal kept quiet until the end, but still introducing Anakin as a character. They cut out episode one because it's not really necessary, you see it from the start of his training, rather than his rescue from Tatooine.

Best to watch it the way it was told first then watch the pants newer ones again to fill in the gaps

i wouldn't go that far 1 isnt good 2 and 3 are ok. you may as well watch em in order though as long as menace dosent put you off

I have a feeling you'll be able to tell people's age from their reply.

 

I'd do them in the order of film release, i.e. books 4, 5 and 6 followed by 1, 2 and 3.

 

I'm old enough to remember going to the ABC in Harrogate with my school mates to see the first one

I to VI builds the story but episode V is the best.

You only need to watch 4 (the original and best) then maybe 5, the rest are just waffle and done for the money, but 4 was ground breaking. Saw it a few times when it originally came out, have it on VHS and read the book countless times...ok so I have a biased view!

I did make my little sister watch them in 123456 order - and told her that it was illegal to not have watched StarWars by the time she was 10yrs old. Apparently she actually believed me for several years and reminded me of the fact a couple of weeks ago!

I have to agree with this assessment. 1 is abysmal and has not a single redeeming element. 2 is poor. I haven't seen much of 3 but from what I've seen, it's just as bad as 2. There are some elements to 6 which aren't great, but most of it's good.

Thanks guys. I'll probably go for the popular choice of 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3. I already know the major surprise of Episode 5, it's been pretty hard to stay away from that line about parental lineage after all these years!

Why wouldnt you watch them in the "story order"? Despite quality issues I can't see the point of mixing up the story?

I'm slightly concerned that someone has gone to the effort of thinking that through but I'd agree that it definitely sounds like the best order to watch them in!

Definitely 4,5,6 then 1,2,3 (maybe with 4,5,6 again)

 

They're two totally different trilogies in terms of storytelling and scope (not to mention that one is incredible and the other average at best)

 

The first three are definitely not required to appreciate the second.

 

I think Tim Bisley best sums up the general opinion of Episode one...
